INSTALLING , CONFIGURING ,AND
TROUBLESHOOTING THE NETWORK POLICY
SERVER ROLE

Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials is an ideal first

server for small businesses with up to 25 users and
50 devices.
For organizations with up to 100 users and 200
devices, you can now use Windows Server 2012 R2
with the Windows Server Essentials Experience role
installed. This topic addresses both scenarios.
Windows Server Essentials Experience, the new
server role in Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard and
Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter, enables you to
take advantage of all the features (such as Remote
Web Access and PC backup) that are available to you
in Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials without the
locks and limits that are enforced in Windows Server
2012 R2 Essentials. This server role is also available
in Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials and is
enabled by default. For more information about this
server role, see the
Windows Server Essentials Experience Overview [

Active Directory Domain Services installation
uses Server Manager and Windows Power Shell, like all
other server roles and features in Windows Server 2012.
The Dcpromo.
exe program no longer provides GUI configuration options.
You use a graphical wizard in Server Manager or the Server
Manager module for Windows Power Shell in both local and
remote installations. By running multiple instances of those
wizards or camlets and targeting different servers, you can
deploy AD DS to multiple domain controllers simultaneously,
all from one single console.

Installing the DHCP Server Role
Before you begin
Before you configure your computer as a DHCP server, verify that:
You are familiar with DHCP concepts such as scopes, leases, and
options.
The operating system is configured correctly.
In Windows Server® 2008, DHCP depends on the appropriate
configuration of the operating system and its services.
This computer has a static IP address
(see Configuring a DHCP server static IP address.)
All existing disk volumes use the NTFS file system. FAT32 volumes
are not secure, and they do not support file and folder compression,
disk quotas, file encryption, or individual file permissions.

NPS Authentication Methods
When users attempt to connect to your network through network access
servers (also called RADIUS clients), such as wireless access points,
802.1X authenticating switches, dial-up servers, and virtual private
network (VPN) servers, Network Policy Server (NPS) authenticates and
authorizes the connection request before allowing or denying access.
Because authentication is the process of verifying the identity of the user
or computer attempting to connect to the network, NPS must receive proof
of identity from the user or computer in the form of credentials.
Some authentication methods use password-based credentials. For
example, Microsoft Challenge-Handshake Authentication Protocol (MS-
CHAP) requires that users type in a user name and password. These
credentials are then passed to the NPS server by the network access server,
and NPS verifies the credentials against the user accounts database.

all the defaults and make sure clients can connect over
the ports required.
2. Users have to be allowed to connect in their AD
3. The Windows VPN client will default to using IKEv2
when using the "Auto-detect" option for the VPN
