An element is a substance
made up of only one kind
atom. An element is a pure
substance that can’t be
broken down into any
other substances.

1. Metal Elements
1. Metal Elements

▪ Metal is an element that has shiny properties and

is generally a good conductor of electricity and
conductor of heat. Metallic elements are generally
solid at normal temperatures and pressures, except
mercury in the form of liquid. In general, metal
elements can be forged so that they can be formed
into other objects.
7
2. NonMetal Elements
2. Non-Metallic Elements

▪ Non-metal elements are elements that do not

have properties such as metals. In general, non-
metallic elements are gaseous and solid at normal
temperatures and pressures. Examples of non-
metallic elements in the form of gases are oxygen,
nitrogen, and helium.

9
3. Semi- metallic elements
3. Semi-metallic Elements

▪ In addition to metal and non-metallic elements, there are

also semi-metal elements, known as metalloids. Metalloids are
elements that have metallic and non-metallic properties.
Semilogam elements are usually semiconductor. What is a
semiconductor? Semiconductor materials cannot conduct
electricity properly at low temperatures, but the conductivity of
electricity becomes better when the temperature is higher.

Alkaline Earth Metals
26
GROUP PROPERTIES

27
• The word “earth” was used for the oxides of group 2A by the ancient scientists.

• Alkaline earth metals, after the alkali metals, are secondary metals with strong
metallic properties.

• The group 2A elements are less active than those of 1A, but more active than those
of group 3A.

• Except Be, all form ionic compounds.

• Be forms mostly covalent compounds.

28
• The atomic radius increases from top to bottom.

• The melting point, boiling point and the hardness of the elements decrease from top to
bottom.

• Beryllium is the hardest alkaline earth metal

• Barium is the softest alkaline earth metal.

• Malleable and ductile.

• Excess Mg+2 and Ca+2 in water means that it is hard.

29
Characteristic Flame Colors of
Alkaline Earth Metals

30
CHEMICAL PROPERTIES

• They are Covered by their oxides when they are exposed to air.

• Burn in air with bright flame.

• Activity of the metals increases from Be to Ba.

• Reactions of Ca, Sr and Ba are easy with water.

• Reactions of Be and Mg with water are difficult.

31
Aluminium Group Metal
Elements
33
▪ The aluminum family consists of elements

“ in Group 13 of the periodic table: boron (B),

aluminum (Al), gallium (Ga), indium (In),
and thallium (Tl). The family is usually
named after the second element, aluminum,
rather than the first, boron, because boron is
less typical of the family members than is
aluminum. Boron is a metalloid (an element
that has some of the properties of metals and
some of the properties of nonmetals), while
the other four members of the family are all
metals.

34
Properties of Aluminum
▪ Lightness: Its specific weight is 2.7 g/cm3, which is one-third that
of steel.
▪ Non – toxic
▪ Good Strength: Corrosion-resistance due aluminum oxide
formation
▪ Good Conductivity of heat and electricity
▪ Highly Ductile
▪ Highly Reflective
▪ Impermeable and odorless
35
▪ Recyclability
BORON INFORMATION

▪ Chemically, Boron is closer to silicon than to the

rest of the elements in the group.
▪ Boron is an essential mineral for plants.
▪ We ingest about 2 milligrams of boron each day
from food.

36
Boron Thermal Information

▪ Melting point: 2079 °C

▪ Boiling point: 4000 °C
▪ Specific heat: 1.02 J/gK
▪ Heat of fusion: 50.20 kJ/mol

37
Aluminum Information

▪ Aluminum is to reactive to occur in nature by itself. The

most common ore is Bauxite (Al 2 O 3 .2H 2 O)
▪ In its purest form, Aluminum is soft and weak, so alloys
with small amounts of copper, magnesium, silicon, and
manganese are used.
▪ Aluminum is the most abundant metal and third most
abundant element in the Earth’s crust.

38
Aluminum Thermal Information

▪ Melting point: 660.37 °C

▪ Boiling point: 2519 °C
▪ Specific heat: 0.90 J/gK
▪ Heat of fusion: 10.790 kJ/mol

39
GALIUM

40
▪ Galium is soft, silvery, shiny metal
▪ Conductor of electricity
▪ But unlike in regularly metal, it is soft it can melt
in the palm of your bare hand
▪ It has a very low melting point

41
GALLIUM, INDIUM AND THALLIUM

▪ are only found as miner components of various

minerals.
▪ These elements are produced or extracted by
electrolytic reduction in aqueous solution
▪ They are relatively soft and reactive, which
readily dissolve in acids.

42
43
SUMMARY OF ALUMINIUM GROUP

▪ SILVER
▪ GOOD CONDUCTORS OF HEAT
▪ GOOD CONDUCTOR OF ELECTRICITY
▪ BORON IS METALLOID, THE OTHERS ARE METALS
▪ VERY ABUNDANT IN THE EARTH CRUST
▪ LOW DENSITY, LIGHT WEIGHT
▪ HAVE 3 VALENCE ELECTRONS
