Solving Problems Involving Logarithmic Functions Equations and Inequalities

The document discusses using logarithmic functions to calculate earthquake magnitudes on the Richter scale and sound intensities in decibels. It provides examples of calculating magnitudes for earthquakes that are 100,000 and 15,000 times stronger than the standard measurement. It also gives two problems, one to determine how many times stronger an earthquake of magnitude 7.5 is compared to the standard, and another involving using a virus growth formula to determine the number of viruses after 2 hours and the time to reach 59,049 viruses.

SOLVING PROBLEMS INVOLVING

LOGARITHMIC FUNCTIONS,
EQUATIONS and INEQUALITIES

The Richter scale is used to measure the
magnitude of an earthquake by the formula:
𝑅 = 𝑙𝑜𝑔
Where A is the measure of the amplitude of the
earthquake wave taken 100 km from the epicenter
of the earthquake and 𝐴o is the amplitude of the
smallest detectable wave also called the standard
wave whose amplitude is 1 micron = 10-4 cm.

Example 1: A mild earthquake have 100,000
times the ground motion of the standard
detectable intensity used to measure the earth’s
vibration. What would be the magnitude of the
said earthquake?
Solution:
𝑅 = 𝑙𝑜𝑔 = log 100000

When solved, log 100,000 = 5 , it means that the intensity

of the earthquake is 5 based on Richter Scale.

The formula 𝑑 = 10𝑙𝑜𝑔 where A is the sound’s
intensity, and is the normal sound’s intensity.

Example 2: Find the normal voice’s rating which is

15,000 as intense as the standard one.

Solution:
𝑑 = 10𝑙𝑜𝑔
𝑑 = 10𝑙𝑜𝑔
𝑑 = 10(𝑙𝑜𝑔15,000)
𝑑 = 10(4.1761)
𝑑 = 41.761 Therefore, the normal voice’s rating is
approximately 42 decibels.

Solve the following questions below:

1. If the magnitude of an earthquake is 7.5 , how

many times does the intensity of that earthquake
be more than the standard one?
(Use this formula: = 𝑙𝑜𝑔
2. A certain virus has a basic formula of 𝑓(ℎ) = 3ℎ
for the duplication of cell.

i. Using the formula given, determine the number

of viruses after 2 hours.

ii. ii. How long would it take for the virus to reach
the number 59,049?
