Lesson 1 Representation of Function

This document covers functions and their representations. It includes three lessons: (1) representing functions using piecewise functions and one-to-one functions, (2) evaluating functions using substitution and determining if functions are even or odd, and (3) performing operations on functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and composition. The document provides examples and activities to solidify understanding of key function concepts.

Lesson 1

Representation
of Function
Learning Objectives

1. Representreal-life situations using functions,

including piecewise function
2. Represent real-life situations using one-to-one
function
Activity Questions
1. What is function in your own words?
2. What is/are your function/s as a student:
a. To your family?
b. To the school?
c. To your teacher?
d. To the society?
e. To your friends?
 A Relation is a set of ordered pairs.
The Domain of a relation is the set of first
coordinates. The Range is the set of second
coordinates.
Types of Relation
These are the types of relation between
domain and range.
What is Function?

A Function is a relation in which element of

the domain corresponds to exactly one
element of the range.
Take Note!

When finding the domain and range of a function

involving a radical with an even index: Radicand
must be non-negative. Hence, the radicand must
be greater than or equal to zero.
Activity 1.
Instructions: Determine each problem to know what type of
relation(one-to-one, one-to-many, many-to-one) and identify if
they are function or not.

3. Is there any types of functions?
Linear Function

a function f is a Linear Function if where and

are real numbers, and and are not both equal

to zero.
Quadratic Function

a quadratic function is any equation of the

form where are real numbers and .

Vertex Form of a Quadratic Function

Is written in the vertex form. The graph is a

parabola whose vertex is the point The parabola
is symmetric to the line if the parabola opens
upward; if the parabola opens downward.
Constant function and Identity function
A linear function f is a Constant function if

One-to-one Function

a one-to-one function is a function in which

for each value of y in the range of f, there is just

one value of x in the domain of f such the
