Angularity Number Test: Sushrut Gautam KCE074BCE089 Transportation Engineering II Khwopa College of Engineering

This document describes the test used to determine the angularity number of an aggregate sample. The angularity number indicates how angular the particles in an aggregate are, with a higher number meaning more angular particles. The test involves filling a metal cylinder with the aggregate sample in layers that are each tamped 100 times. The weight of the aggregate and weight of water needed to fill the cylinder are then used in a formula to calculate the angularity number. An angularity number between 7-10 is generally preferred for road construction, with rounded aggregates having a number of 0 and the most angular a number of 11.

ANGULARITY:
Angularity in general is the absence of rounding of particles of an aggregate.
An aggregate particle, which is more rounded, is less angular and vice versa.

The usual shapes of the particles are;

i. Rounded (river gravel)
ii. Flaky (laminated rock)
iii. Elongated
iv. Angular (crushed rock)

ANGULARITY NUMBER
Angularity number of an aggregate is the amount by which the
percentage of voids in it after compacting in a prescribed manner
exceeds 33.
Where, “33” is the percentage of volume of voids, in a perfectly rounded
aggregate.
“67” is the percentage of volume of solids in a perfectly rounded aggregate.

Angularity Number is a non-destructive, shape test of aggregate.

The value of angularity number generally lies between 0 and 11. In road
construction angularity number of 7 – 10 is generally preferred.

The more angular the aggregate is, the more is the Angularity number.

The rounded aggregate has Angularity Number zero and Angularity

number 11 indicates the most angular aggregate.
Angularity Number Test of Aggregate

Apparatus required:
Metal cylinder of 3 liter capacity
Metal scoop
Tamping rod
Weighing balance

Procedure:
i. The test sample of the aggregate is sieved and specified size ranges such as
16-20 mm, are used for the test.
ii. The sample is then filled in the metal cylinder in three layers. Each layer is
tamped 100 times with tamping rod, of 16mm diameter and 60cm length,
before the next layer is put.
iii. The weight of the aggregate filled in the cylinder is determined. And then
after emptying it, it is filled with water and weight of the water is also
determined.
iv. Then use the following formula to find the Angularity number:
Angularity Number =

W=Aggregate weight filled in the cylinder.

w=Weight of the water filled in the cylinder.
G= Sp. gr. of aggregate.
