Electrical Equipment Manual & Methodology Transformer Oil Dielectric Breakdown Voltage Test

The document provides instructions for performing a transformer oil dielectric breakdown voltage (DBV) test. The test measures the minimum voltage needed for a flashover to occur in transformer oil due to impurities. The document outlines the test setup and equipment, test procedures which include sampling the oil and performing multiple voltage tests, and evaluation criteria for new and aged oil. Precautions are also provided to safely conduct the high voltage test.

ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT MANUAL & METHODOLOGY

TRANSFORMER OIL DIELECTRIC BREAKDOWN VOLTAGE TEST
I. OIL DIELECTRIC BREAKDOWN VOLTAGE TEST
A. Purpose: Transformer oil is used as an insulating medium and also
acts as a heat transfer medium to carry off excess heat generated
by the losses of the transformer unit. Oil dielectric breakdown
voltage (DBV) is a test use to measure the minimum voltage at
which flashover occurs in an oil due to impurities or
contaminants.
B. Test condition
1. ASTM D877 Test – This test used disk electrodes and test equipment shall
be capable a test voltage range of 40kV and above. The spacing between
electrodes is check with round gauge with a diameter 0.1in (2.5mm). The
applied voltage is uniformly increase at a rate of approximately 3 kV/s rms
until breakdown occurs.
2. ASTM 1816 Test –In this test, electrode used is spherically caped
electrodes with gap specification call for sector diameter of 36mm and a
25mm radius. The gap between electrodes is about 0.08 in. Voltage
increase during test is same with ASTM D877.
B. Test Method:
3. Gather and record nameplate data and as-found tap changer position
setting.
4. Check transformer oil level. Check also status of pressure gauge, once the
pressure is at vacuum condition (negative (-) pressure ), release pressure
via pressure relief valve so that oil will flow at the sampling valve.
5. Identify the transformer sampling valve.
6. Prepare oil pan, adaptor and hose prior to sampling to avoid oil spill when
opening the sampling valve. Also prepare empty bottle for oil flashing.
7. Prepare oil tester equipment and oil sampling cup.
8. During sampling, perform oil flashing (usually 3 times) for the hose and
sampling cup. After perform sampling until appropriate level of oil in the
cup is reach. Then, make sure to close the sampling valve tightly.
9. Prepare oil cup sample in the oil tester and perform testing. Be aware
not to touch the cup or the oil once the tester is injecting voltage.
10.Record each test result and repeat testing up to five (5) times. Each test
has a one (1) minute rest time.
11.Get the average of all five (5) test and record it for evaluation.
12. Re-check valve status for any possible leak and damage after sampling.

F. Precaution
1. Used a good 230 VAC power supply.
2. Inspect electrode spacing in the sampling cup is correct and not shorted.
3. Do not open immediately the sampling valve without preparation of oil
pan, adapter and hose.
4. Upon sampling, handle carefully the oil sampling cup.
5. During testing, do not allow any personnel to touch the test sample. Test
equipment output is high voltage and may result to electrocution.
6. Do not turn off immediately the test equipment once testing still ongoing.
7. Upon preparation and after used of test equipment, handle the unit
carefully since parts are prone to damage or equipment is fragile.
8. Clean the test equipment after use.
