Introduction To Quadratic Functions

This document provides an introduction to quadratic functions through examples and explanations. It begins by defining quadratic functions as second-degree polynomials where the dependent variable is a function of the independent variable squared. Examples are given of representing quadratic functions using tables of values, graphs, and equations. The key aspects are that quadratic functions produce equal second differences from equal differences in the independent variable and have a U-shaped parabolic graph. Students are then asked to practice identifying quadratic functions through various assessment questions.

Introduction to
Quadratic Functions

Objectives:
At the end of this video you will be
able to:
a. model real-life situations using
quadratic functions; and
b. represent a quadratic function using a
table of values, graph and equation.

For a quadratic equation
to be a quadratic function, simply
replace zero by y or f(x) to form the
quadratic function

A quadratic function is a
second-degree polynomial

where are real numbers and

Mr. San Miguel is renovating his
house. Before the lockdown, he
managed to buy square tiles with 5
sizes. He wants to determine the area
of each tiles. Let’s help him.

2
𝐴=𝑠
s 3 6 9 12 15
A 9 36 81 144 225

In the given problem, the area

(A) of the tiles depends on the
length of its side (s). And the
equation is an example of
quadratic function.
Quadratic Function
2
𝑓 ( 𝑥 )= 2 𝑥 +5 𝑥 − 9

𝑦=3 𝑥 (− 𝑥+ 2)
Examples   2
𝑎=𝑏 −7 𝑏
Not Quadratic Function
𝑦=7 𝑥 +5

𝑓 ( 𝑥)=|2 𝑥|

3

𝑦=5 𝑥 − 9
Now that you know how to
identify quadratic functions
given an equation, we will
now proceed with identifying
a quadratic function from a
given set of ordered pairs or
table of values.
A table of values is a
graphic organizer or
chart that helps you
determine two or more
points that can be used to
create your graph.
Example 1
Let us use the table of values in the previous
problem to discover a pattern.

s 3 6 9 12 15
A 9 36 81 144 225
Differences in s 3 3 3 3

s 3 6 9 12 15
A 9 36 81 144 225

1st differences in A 27 45 63 81

2nd differences in A 18 18 18
Example 2
Identify whether the table of values below
represents quadratic function.

X -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4
y -5 0 3 4 3 0 -5
1 1 1 1 1 1

X -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4
y -5 0 3 4 3 0 -5
5 3 1 -1 -3 -5
-2 -2 -2 -2 -2
x -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4
y -5 0 3 4 3 0 -5
Since, the differences in x are equal
and it produces equal second
differences in y therefore the given
table of values represents a quadratic
function.
Another way of
representing
quadratic function
is by using graph.
If you are to toss a ball to your friend,
what do you think will be the path of the
ball?
The path of the ball
describes a curve
path which is in
U-shaped called
parabola.
Here are some examples of quadratic functions
represented by a graph.

Let’s Wrap it Up!
 A quadratic function is a second-degree
polynomial
where are real numbers and
 In a quadratic function, equal differences in
the independent variable produce equal
second differences in the dependent variable.
 The graph of a quadratic function is U-shaped
called parabola
