Color CRT Monitors

The document discusses different types of display monitors and technologies. It describes color CRT monitors which use phosphors and either the beam penetration or shadow mask method to produce color. Direct view storage tubes maintain the screen image inside the CRT using two electron guns. Flat panel displays like plasma panels and LCDs offer reduced size and power usage compared to CRTs. Plasma panels contain gases between glass plates that glow when voltages are applied. LCDs use liquid crystals that change the polarization of light with a voltage to produce images.

Topics to be Covered

Color CRT Monitors

Direct-View Storage Tubes
Flat-Panel Displays
Plasma panels
Liquid Crystal Displays

Color CRT Monitors
It displays color pictures by using a combination of
phosphors that emit different-colored light which
generates a range of colors.
It produces color by using the following two
techniques:
Beam-penetration method
Shadow-mask method

3 www.chitkarauniversity.edu.in 12/08/2021
Beam Penetration method

Used for displaying color pictures and used with

Random scan monitors.
2 layers of phosphor coated on the inside of CRT
screen.
Displayed color depends on the speed of the electron
beam.
Disadvantage: Only four colors can be generated i.e.
red, green, yellow and orange.

Shadow Mask Method

Shadow Mask Method

It is used in Raster Scan Systems.

It has 3 phosphor colored dots at each pixel position
which emits red, green and blue color resp.
Has 3 electron guns and shadow masked grid just
behind the phosphor coated screen.
Beams are deflected and focused as a group onto the
shadow mask which contain a series of holes aligned
with phosphor dot patterns.
Color variations can be obtained by varying the
intensity levels of the beams.

Direct View Storage Tube
•An alternative method for maintaining a screen image is to store
the picture information inside the CRT instead of refreshing the
screen.
Two electron guns are used in a DVST.
• Primary gun or writing gun is used to store the picture
pattern.
• Flood gun maintains the picture display.

Direct View Storage Tube
Advantages
• no refreshing is needed.
• very high resolutions without flicker.
Disadvantages
• do not display color.
• selected parts of a picture cannot be erased.

Flat Panel Displays
Have reduced volume, weight, and power
requirements compared to a CRT.
Classification:
Emissive: are devices that convert electrical energy into
light. E.g. Plasma panels, thin-film electroluminescent
displays and Light-emitting diodes(LED).
Non-emissive: use optical effects to convert sunlight or
light from some other source into graphics patterns.
E.g. Liquid crystal Display (LCD)

Plasma Panels
Filling the region between
two glass plates with a
mixture of gases that usually
includes neon.
Firing voltages applied to a
pair of horizontal and vertical
conductors cause the gas at
the intersection of the two
conductors to break down
into a glowing plasma of
electrons and ions.
Picture definition is stored in
a refresh buffer.

Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)
 It is called Liquid Crystal
because these compounds have a
crystalline arrangement of
molecules but flow like a liquid.
 Flat panel displays commonly
use nematic liquid.
How it works …
 Top plate transparent and
polarised, bottom plate reflecting.
 Light passes through top plate
and crystal, and reflects back to
eye.
 Voltage applied to crystal
changes polarisation.
