Recall

A quadratic function is a function is

a function that can be described by an
equation of the form
where. The graph of a quadratic function
is called a parabola.
The Vertex Form of Quadratic Function

 ,.
Vertex:
 Axis of Symmetry: x = h
 Graph: a > 0 , the parabola opens upward
a < 0 , the parabola opens downward

Graphing Quadratic Function Using Factoring

The points where the graph intersects the x-

axis will be the solutions to the equation ax2+
bx+ c= 0.
That is, if the polynomial ax2+ bx+ c can be
factored to (x-p) (x-q), we know by the zero
product property that if (x-p) (x-q) = 0, either
(x-p) = 0 or (x-q)= 0.

Then p and q are the solutions to the

equation ax2+bx+c= 0 and therefore the
intercepts of the quadratic equation.
Since the x-coordinate of the vertex of a
parabola is exactly the midpoint of the
x-intercepts, the x-coordinate of the
vertex will be.
Example : Graph the function
y= x2- 8x+12 using factoring.
Solution
Factor the trinomial x2- 8x+ 12
a= 1, b= -8 and c= 12
Find two factors of c whose sum
equals the coefficient b.
x2- 8x+ 12= (x-2)(x-6).
Equate to zero,
x- 2= 0 x- 6= 0
x- 2+ 2= 0+ 2 x- 6+ 6= 0+ 6
x= 2 x= 6
Therefore, the x-intercepts of the
function are 2 and 6.
(2,0)(6,0)

The coordinate of the vertex is the
midpoint of the x-intercepts
= = =4
Therefore, the x-coordinate of the
vertex is 4.

Find the y-coordinate of the vertex.

y= x2- 8x+ 12, x= 4
Solution: y= x2- 8x+ 12
y= (4)2- 8(4) + 12
y= 16- 32+ 12
y= 28- 32
y= -4
The coordinates of the vertex are(4, -4).

Graph of the function y= x2- 8x+ 12.

(4, -4), (2, 0), (6, 0)
Example : Graph the function
f(x)= x2- 7x- 18 using factoring.
Solution
• Factor the trinomial x2- 8x+ 12
a= 1, b= -7and c= -18
• Find two factors of c whose sum
equals the coefficient b.
x2- 7x - 18= (x-9)(x+2)

Equate to zero,
x- 9= 0 x+2= 0
x- 9+ 9= 0+ 9 x+ 2-2= 0-2
x= 9 x= -2
(9,0) (-2,0)
• The coordinate of the vertex is the
midpoint of the x-intercepts
= = = 3.5
• Find the y-coordinate of the vertex.
y= x2- 7x -18, x= 3.5
Solution:
y= x2- 8x+ 12
y= (3.5)2- 7(3.5) - 18
y= 12.25 – 24.5 -18
y= -30.25
The coordinates of the vertex are
(3.5, -30.25).
