Components of Technical
Writing VS Essays
 Technical writing has five components.

1. Development
2. Grammar
3. Organization
4. Style
5. Document Design
Components of Technical
Writing VS Essays
 Some of the components are same with
Essays, some of them are somehow same
and some of them are quite different.

 Peopleread Literature for pleasure,


Essays for enlightenment (The process of
understanding something clearly),
Journalism for news, while they read
Technical writing to accomplish a job.
Development
 Development is same for both Technical writing
and Essays.
 In both of them we use examples, testimony

(Prove), anecdotes (Short stories), data and


research.

 If
a student develop his/her essays using such
means as examples, testimony, anecdotes, data
and research the same development techniques
are applicable when he/she write memos,
letters, and reports etc…… at work.
Grammar
 Grammar is also same for both
Technical writing and Essays.
Grammar is very important for both
of them because grammar is the
essential factor of effective writing.
Grammar leads best understanding

and idea of both Technical writing


and Essays.
 In
Grammar
a survey of over 700 technical writers
asked to list the important aspects of
correspondence, they ranked 98% correct
grammar as an essential component of
successful writing.
 Grammar is not merely the concern of

English teachers. Professional writers and


business people perceive it as an essential
component of successful writing.
Organization
Organization is similar in some ways, and

different in others.

Technical writing has topic sentence when


needed, but Essay always has topic sentence.
Both of them have body paragraphs.
Technical writing always has conclusion, but

Essay has it when needed.


Style
 Style is different for both of them.

Style mean’s words usage, sentence
structures, and paragraphs length.
Technical writing rely on short, denotative

(Objective) words; short, simple sentences;


short paragraphs with clarified information,
but Essays rely on longer, more connotative
(expressive) words; longer, more complex
sentences; longer, more detailed paragraphs.
 Paragraphs
Style
are shorter in Technical writing
( often two or three sentences ), but in Essays
paragraphs are longer.
 The readers of technical writing do not
have time, nor an interest in the subject
matter, they do not read for pleasure, but
the readers of essays read for learning or
exams and sometimes for pleasure, so
they must have time and interest.
Document Design
 Document design is Perfect different for both of them,
Because it is a factor for technical writing, nor usually
for essays.
 Document design refers to the physical layout of
the correspondence.
 Essays consist of words, words, and more words,

separated by indentations to create paragraphs,


While technical writing uses highlighting
techniques, such as graphics, headings,
subheadings, different fonts, bullets etc……to
help the readers access and understand the data.
Document Design
 Technical writing is written to
different audiences for different
purposes than essays, so the
style should be different in
each correspondence of
technical writing according to
purposes.
