ADVERBS

Adverbs of Manner
1. Adverbs are used when we give more
information about verbs(a), adjectives(b) or
another adverbs(c).
a. She painted (verb) the wall carefully (adverb).
b. She is an extremely (adverb) hardworking
(adjective) supervisor.
c. She ate her lunch very (adverb) quickly (adverb).

4. Adverbs are also used to describe or give
more information about adjectives or other
adverbs.
• The movie is absolutely overwhelming. (absolutely tells the
readers how overwhelming the movie really is)
• She walked very quickly to the car. (very tells the readers how
quickly the person walked)
5. These adverbs usually come immediately
before the adjective or adverb they describe.

6. Adverbs of manners are often formed by
adding –ly to adjectives.

7. Some adverbs are irregular, they do not end with –ly.
• Good well
8. A few adjectives and adverbs have the same form, e.g.
late, fast and hard.
• Tammy is a fast learner.
• Tammy learns fast.
* lately is not an adverb, lately means ‘recently”.
* hardly is not an adverb, hardly means ‘almost not”
Adverbs of Frequency
1. Use adverbs of frequency to express how
often something happens.

2. Adverbs of frequency usually come before the
main verb.
She never wears skirt.
3. Adverbs of frequency appear after the verb
be.
My parents are never late.
