The document discusses different types of construction equipment used for material handling and hoisting, including trucks, compacting equipment, cranes, and hoisting devices. It describes hauling equipment like dump trucks and factors in truck selection like capacity. For cranes, it distinguishes between mobile cranes that can move freely, like crawler, wheeled, mast and gantry cranes, and tower cranes which provide high lifting heights but have limited mobility. The document provides details on selecting appropriate material handling devices based on the material properties and job site requirements.

CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENTS
1. MATERIAL HANDLING DEVICES
1.1 General
 The main objective of the efficient material handling is to save costs.
 Material handling equipment are not the production machinery.
 These are auxiliary equipment which improves the flow of the
materials which intern reduce stoppages in production machines and
thus increases their production time.
 Material handling devices are used for the following main functions:
i. Movement and positioning of the construction material.
ii. Lifting a load, and loading it down at desired place, may be at certain
distance away or at a particular height.
iii. Loading of material into transportation equipment.
iv. Unloading of material into transportation equipment.

CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENTS
1. MATERIAL HANDLING DEVICES
1.2 Selection of Material Handling Devices
 Material handling devices, should be able to give maximum efficiency,
economy, life and reliability service.
 The selection of the material handling devices depend upon the following
factor:
(A) Factors related to the material:
I. Type of material to be handled
a) Bulk or units
b) Large or small
c) Heavy or light
d) Shape
e) Rough or fragile
II. Volume of material

1.2 Selection of Material Handling Devices
(A) Factors related to the material:
I. Volume of material
II. Distance over which transported
III. Height to which lifted/lowered
IV. Method of construction
V. Space available for the equipment
VI. Number of times materials to be handled
(B) Factors related to the material:
VII. Type and kind suitable for the job
VIII. Size and capacity of the equipment
IX. Number of hours it is expected to work
X. Adoptability to other service
XI. Ease of operation and maintenance

1.2 Selection of Material Handling Devices
(B) Factors related to the material:
VI. Electric power availability
VII. Expected life of the equipment
VIII. Comparison of various equipment available in the market with respect
to
a) Cost of installation,
b) Operation and maintenance,
c) Its ease in operation,
d) Reliability, and
e) Other requirements of economy and feasibility.

1.3 Types of Material Handling Devices
 There can be four divisions of handling equipment such as:

Lifting & Transportation Combination

• Block & Tackle • Wheel • Spiral Chute • Cableways
• Winches Barrows & • Lift Truck • Ropeways
• Hoists Hand Truck • Crane Truck
• Elevators • Narrow-gauge • Fork Lift Truck
• Pillar Cranes mine rail road • Conveyors of

2. CRANES
2.1 Types of Cranes
 Construction crane are generally classified into two major families: (1)
Mobile Cranes and (2) Tower Cranes.
 Mobile Crane: a crane that can move freely about the job site under its
own power without being restricted to predetermine travel path. The most
common types are:
MOBILE
CRANES

MAST GANTRY
CRAWLER WHEELED
CRANES CRANES

CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENTS

2. CRANES
2.1 Types of Cranes
 Towered Cranes: Provide high lifting height and good working radius,
while taking up a very limited area. These advantages are achieved at
the expense of low lifting capacity and limited mobility, as compared to
mobile cranes.
 The three common configurations are;
i. a special vertical boom arrangement on a mobile crane,
ii. a mobile crane superstructure mounted atop a tower, or
iii. a vertical tower (European type) with a jib and operator's cab atop.
