Shadows are formed when an opaque object blocks light rays traveling in straight lines from a light source. If an object gets in the way of light rays, it stops the light from traveling through and creates an area of darkness or shadow behind the object. The size and shape of a shadow depends on the position and size of the light source compared to the object. Shadows have the same shape as the object casting them because light travels in straight lines. Reflections are caused by light bouncing off objects, while shadows are formed when objects block light.

Factors affecting the size and position
of the shadow of an object:
The size of a shadow depends on the
distance between the light source and
the object that blocks that light source AND
the size of the object. If you have two
people standing side-by-side outside on a
sunny day, the distance to the sun is the
same for both people.
