PRESENT CONTINUOUS
DEFINITION:
We use the present continuous when often the action is happening at the
time of speaking.
Pattern : S + to be +V-ing(present participle)
to be= - is (she, he, it )
-am ( I )
-are ( you, they, we )
we use present continuous when we talk about……
an activity that is in progress now
example: -Mrs. Marisa is eating
-Yupi&Akbar are playing badminton
an activity that is in progress in general
example: -Hilmi is writing another book this year
-I’m studying for my exam
PRESENT CONTINUOUS
Explanation usage:
Describe something which is happening at the exact
moment of speech ex: jim is watching at the moment
Describe an action that is taking place now but not at the
exact moment of speech ex:john is working in london
Describe an event planned in the future(informal) ex: i’m
taking my french class on Tuesday
Describe a temporary situation ex: i’m staying with a friend
for a few days
To emphasize the frequency of an action ex: that child is
always crying for no good reason
To describe changing situation ex:her health is improving by
leaps and bounds.
PRESENT CONTINUOUS
( + ) sentence: S + to be + V-ing

Yupita is making a movie this year
( - ) sentence: S + to be + not + V-ing
Akbar&Ita are not sitting down
Himi is not making movie this year
( ? ) statements: a. yes/no Question
b. wh+h Question
Pattern:to be + s + V-ing ? Atau ( wh + h )+ to be + s + V-ing
-are you eating?
-what are you eating?
Rules for spelling the gerund (Verb+ing)
Spelling rules :
a. Verbs that end in - “e” drop it (eing )
Ex :- make making -dance dancing
-write writing -come coming
b. Verbs that end in – “ie” change it ying
Ex :-die dying
-lie lying
c. Verbs that end in a vowel + a consonant double this
conconant : p pp
Ex :-stop stopping -swim swimming

Example conversation :
Hilmi : “hey, Pi! What are you doing ?”
Pita : “hello Hil! I’m writing in the whiteboard”
Hilmi: “where is your step-brother?”
Pita : “my brother is playing badminton”
Hilmi: “can you call Akbar ?”
Pita : “yes, i can but what for ?”
Hilmi: “i have something information for him”
Pita : “okey, i will call him but my i borrow your
handphone? Cause my battery is running out”

Hilmi: “ why not”
Yupi : “ thank you, hello pita is speaking, who is it ?”
akbar: “hi, Pi. I’m Akbar”
Yupi : “are you using somebody’s phone? This isn’t your phone
numbers, right ?”
Akbar: “ no, it isn’t. i am using my sister’s phone. My battery is
running out. By the way, this is not your phone number too
cause this hilmi’s number phone right?”
Yupi : “that’s right, i’m borrowing the handphone from her”
Akbar : “by the way, what are you doing with her?”
Yupi : “we are sitting here and discussing about our
homework”

Hilmi : “same with me, by the way why you not join with us

Akbar : “that’s good idea, hil. I’m coming “

Hilmi : “i don’t know where to start learning. These are
difficult materials. I’m trying to remember all things but i cannot
remember all of it.
Yupi : “same hil, i have been reading the science books five
times. But i cannot remember almost all of them”.
Hilmi : “i am afraid that i will fall the exam”
Akbar : “ keep calm, you cannot concentrate at the same time
you are worrying about the failure. Start from the easiest
material. Try to understand them”

Hilmi : “maybe, there is something methode can help us?”
Akbar : “ i am just remembering something. I have some
science videos. I have watched half of them. Those videos give
me clear explanation about science. I think you should watch
them too”
Hilmi : “that sounds great, how about you pi ?”
Yupi : “ yeah, that’s good idea! We can try it”
Akbar : “fighting for us! I am sending the links of the videos
to your email, check them out”
Hilmi : “wow, thanks akbar. You are saving my life”
