Fluid Mechanics: Chapter-4

This document contains examples and homework problems related to fluid mechanics and pumps. It discusses key concepts like head, pump power, pump efficiency, and how these variables relate in the Bernoulli equation. It provides 21 example problems calculating values like flow rate, pressure, power, and efficiency for systems involving pipes, reservoirs, and pumps moving both water and oil. The examples proceed from simpler cases with one pump to more complex cases involving multiple sections of pipe with varying diameters or elevations.

Pumps

Pumps add energy to the system and it can be expressed as head (hp)
in Bernoulli Equation.

is pump power, watt (W).

is water power, watt (W).
is pump efficiency, %.

is pump head, m.
Prove?
Horsepower = 0.75 kW
Example (13)
Water is being pumped from the lower to upper reservoir as shown in the
figure below. Find the pump horsepower required assuming 75% pump
efficiency. Neglect head losses. Discharge is 0.22 .
Example (14)
The pump in figure below discharges water at 30 . Neglecting losses and
elevation changes, what power is delivered to the water by the pump?
Example (15)
Oil with a specific gravity of 0.87 is being pumped from a lower reservoir to
an elevated tank as shown below. The pump in the system is 78% efficient
and is rated at 185 kW. Determine the flow rate of the oil in the pipe if the
total head loss from point 1 to point 2 is 12 m of oil.
Homework
Example (16)
For the figure shown, water flows from A, where the diameter is 300 mm, to
B, where the diameter is 600 mm, at a rate of 731 . The pressure head at A is
6.72 m. Considering no loss of energy from A to B, find the pressure head at
B.
(Ans. 3.48 m)

m 7.6

m 3.04
Homework
Example (17)
A 200 mm diameter horizontal pipe is attached to a reservoir as shown
below. If the total head loss between the water surface in the reservoir and
the water jet at the end of the pipe is 1.82 m, what is the flow rate of the
water being discharged from the pipe?
(Ans. 0.23 )
Homework
Example (18)
Oil flows from a tank through a pipe of 150 mm diameter and then
discharges into the air as shown in the figure below. If the head loss from
point 1 to 2 is 0.54 m, determine the air pressure needed at point 1 to cause
0.017 of oil to flow
(Ans. 169.64 kPa)
Homework
Example (19)
A 50 mm diameter siphon is drawing oil (SG = 0.82) from an oil reservoir as
shown in the figure below. If the head loss from point 1 to point 2 is 1.5 m
and from point 2 to point 3 is 2.4 m, find the discharge of oil from the siphon
and the oil pressure at point 2.
(Ans. 0.009 and -36.9 kPa )
Homework
Example (20)
For the pump given in the figure shown, total head loss is 6 m. if the pump
delivers 40 kW of power to the water, determine the flow rate.
(Ans. 0.064 )
Homework
Example (21)
Oil with a specific gravity of 0.86 is being pumped from a reservoir as shown
below. The pressures at points 1 and 2 are -27.6 kPa and 296.5 kPa,
respectively. The rate of flow in the pipe is 0.014 . The pump is rated at 8 hp.
Determine the efficiency of the pump. Neglect energy losses in the system
(Ans. approximately 79 %)
