Mixed Conditionals: J.Benediktavičienė, G.Mizgerienė, 2015

This document discusses different types of mixed conditionals in English. It explains past condition/present result conditionals, which use past perfect tense in the if-clause and present tense in the main clause to talk about a past condition and present result. It also explains present condition/past result conditionals, which use past simple tense in the main clause to talk about a past result due to a present condition. The document provides examples for each type and exercises for students to practice. It also briefly introduces inverted conditionals, which use subject-verb inversion to make second and third conditionals more formal.

Mixed conditionals

J.Benediktavičienė, G.Mizgerienė, 2015

Past Condition / Present Result
• We use this type to express that if something had
been different in the past there would be a
present result.
• It has a condition in the past and a present result.
Eg: If we hadn't missed our flight we'd be in Spain
now.

If + past perfect, would (could, might) + infinitive.

• If I had won the lottery, I would be rich.
BUT I DIDN'T WIN THE LOTTERY IN THE PAST AND I AM NOT RICH
NOW.
• If I had taken French in high school, I would
have more job opportunities.
BUT I DIDN'T TAKE FRENCH IN HIGH SCHOOL AND I DON'T HAVE
MANY JOB OPPORTUNITIES.
• If she had been born in the United States,
she wouldn't need a visa to work here.
BUT SHE WASN'T BORN IN THE UNITED STATES AND SHE DOES
NEED A VISA NOW TO WORK HERE.
J.Benediktavičienė, G.Mizgerienė, 2015
Present Condition / Past Result
• This type has a present condition and a past result.
We use it to express that due to certain present
conditions something already happened in the past.
• Eg: If I was more diligent, I would've finished my
degree at university. The meaning is: I am not a
diligent person and because of this present
condition I have never finished my degree.
if + past simple, would (could, might) have + VIII

J.Benediktavičienė, G.Mizgerienė, 2015

• If I were rich, I would have bought that Ferrari we saw
yesterday.
BUT I AM NOT CURRENTLY RICH AND THAT IS WHY I DIDN'T
BUY THE FERRARI YESTERDAY.
• If Sam spoke Russian, he would have translated the
letter for you.
BUT SAM DOESN'T SPEAK RUSSIAN AND THAT IS WHY HE
DIDN'T TRANSLATE THE LETTER.
• If I didn't have to work so much, I would have gone to
the party last night.
BUT I HAVE TO WORK A LOT AND THAT IS WHY I DIDN'T GO TO
THE PARTY LAST NIGHT.

using if we use the same word order as in
questions)
