Image Segmentation: A Literature Review: Project Proposal

This document proposes a literature review on image segmentation. It begins by introducing computer vision and its key techniques, including image classification, object detection, image segmentation, edge detection, image enhancement, image reconstruction, and object tracking. It then focuses on image segmentation, defining it as splitting a digital image into multiple homogeneous and connected regions. The document discusses why segmentation is important and lists some of its wide applications in areas like remote sensing, medical imaging, object detection, machine vision, and content-based image retrieval. It proposes to provide a detailed review of segmentation techniques, current state-of-the-art methods, applications, and results from these methods. A timeline is also included outlining the tasks and deadlines for the project.

Image Segmentation: A Literature Review

Project Proposal
Computer Vision
 One of the most powerful and compelling types of AI

 Computer vision is the field of computer science that focuses on

replicating parts of the complexity of the human vision system and
enabling computers to identify and process objects in images and
videos in the same way that humans do.
Computer Vision: Key Techniques
 Image Classification
 Object Detection
 Image Segmentation
 Edge Detection
 Image Enhancement
 Image Reconstruction
 Object Tracking
Image Segmentation
 Segmentation is considered to be one of the main techniques in image
processing. It splits a digital image into multiple regions in order to
analyze them

 It partitions an input image into non-overlapping, homogeneous and

connected regions such that “union of any two spatially adjacent
regions is not homogenous”
Image Segmentation: Why?
 Machine vision has been introduced in variety of industrial
applications, allowing the automation of tasks performed so far by
human operators

 Segmentation is a key image processing technique which has wide

variety of applications.
Image Segmentation: Why?
 Wide Variety of Applications

 Remote Sensing
 Medical Imaging: Identifying tumors, anomalies etc
 Object and facial detections
 Machine vision
 Content based image retrieval
 Video surveillance
Image Segmentation: Proposal

 Detailed review of the Techniques

 Review of current state of the art methods

Image Segmentation: Proposal

 Detailed review of the Applications

 Results from state of the art methods
