volleyball
• 1895 – The year the game volleyball was
invented
• FIVB – Federation Internationale de
Volleyball

forms of volleyball on a global level.
What is volleyball?
• A team sport played by 2 teams of six
players on a rectangular court divided by a
net.

Objective
• To volley or send the ball over the net so
that the opposing team cannot return the
ball or prevent it from hitting the ground in
their court.
BASIC VOLLEBALL SKILLS
• Serving – The signal that indicates the
start of the game. A player which is called
the server must serve the ball to the
opponent team to start a volley.
• Different types of service:
• Underhand serve – it is the most common
service used for beginners.
• Overhand/overhead serve – is the most
popular serve especially in volleyball
competitions. The two main overhand
serves are the overhand float and the
overhand topspin.
• Passing – it is done with the objective to
move the ball to a teammate called a
setter. The pass is the first touch by your
team. A pass is perform on any ball that
has been sent over the net to you team’s
side of the court. It is known as a “bump”
or a forearm pass” because it is performed
using the forearms to bump the ball.
Forearm pass – it involves hitting the ball in a
controlled manner to your teammate.
• Overhead pass – it involves hitting the ball
with an overhead playing motion to direct
the ball to your teammate
• Setting – it is a form of an overhead pass
that you can use to send the ball to a
teammate or over the net to the opposing
team.
• Spiking – it is a kind of attack that requires
power of the hand to hit the ball over the
net towards the opponent’s court either
with a combination of a high jump or from
the ground.
• Blocking – it can be performed by players
in the front row. The objectives of the
blockers are to block the ball from an
attempt of a spike from the opponent team
from sending the ball over the net.
• Digging – it is to keep the ball from hitting
the floor if the opposing team spikes the
ball. It is a lot like a forearm pass except
that you must dive or get close to the floor
to make contact with the ball.
