03 - Stop Motion Animation

Stop motion animation is a technique where physically manipulated objects are photographed in small incremental movements to create the illusion of motion when the series of frames are played as a continuous sequence. Clay figures are commonly used due to their ease of repositioning. The document provides examples of early stop motion animations and famous movies that used the technique. It offers guidance on creating a storyboard, building characters and scenes, taking photos in sequences, and editing them together with software to produce a stop motion film. Resources for learning more about stop motion and seeing examples are also listed.

 Stop motion (or frame-by-frame) animation is an animation
technique to make a physically manipulated object appear
to move on its own.
 The object is moved by small amounts between individually
photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement
when the series of frames are played as a continuous
sequence.
 Clay figures are often used in stop motion animations,
known as claymation, for their ease of repositioning.”
 Another objects that can be used for Stop Motion Animation
are Lego, Papercut or even human actor/actress
 Humpty Dumpty Circus (1898)
 Fun in A Bakery Shop (1902)
 Romeo and Juliet (1916) by William
Shakespeare
 The first woman animator that do the Stop
Motion is Helena Smith Dayton, made the
Clay-mation video (1917)
 Willie Hopkins’ 54 Episodes “Miracles in Mud”
 Now, Stop Motion is rarely used in animation
Stop Motion has been used in famous

…So you might be wondering…

“How do I get started?”

You should work in an organized and

step-by-step manner.
• You will need to create a storyboard that gives a summary of what will happen in
your stop motion movie.
• Your storyboard can be simple sketches with short explanations.
• Find out More About Storyboarding

This is an old storyboard from “The

Yogi Bear Show” found at A Blank Storyboard

• Before you get started taking digital pictures you will
need to create a background scenery.
• You can use construction paper, cardboard, paint,
etc.
• You will also need to create your characters and
props using clay or Legos.
• You can also use small toys or other objects.
• Start shooting pictures for your movie.
• You should use a tripod for stable shots.
• A light should be used to ensure good lighting in your images.
• Also, it might be a good idea to ask a friend to help you move your
characters and or objects in small increments.
• Take a picture, make small adjustments, take another picture, and continue
in this manner.
• The more pictures you take with small changes in position, the more realistic
your movie will be.

• Import your pictures into iPhoto.

• Be sure to create an album to keep your
digital images organized.
• Import your pictures into iMovie.
• Place the images in the timeline of the movie in the correct order.
• Set your timing for each picture.
• You will need to experiment until you are satisfied with the
movement timing.
• The more frames per second the smoother the animation will
appear.
• Professional animators use 1 frame per movement with 24 frames
per second.
• Add sounds.
• Export your file as a full quality QuickTime movie file.
