46910: PHD Course in Advanced Finite Element Simulations Using Abaqus

This document provides an introduction to using Abaqus/CAE for finite element analysis. It discusses pre-processing steps like creating a part and assembly, applying materials, sections, loads and boundary conditions. It also covers meshing, job submission, and defining field and history outputs. Examples are presented on modeling a cantilever beam and obtaining its load-deflection curve. Post-processing options like contour plots, path plots, and exporting data to files for additional plotting are also introduced. The goal is to familiarize students with the basic Abaqus workflow through guided examples.

Introduction to Abaqus/CAE
Pre-processing
- “Getting Started with Abaqus: Interactive Edition”
• Creating part (2D or 3D)
– Sketch (or import) the geometry of a part
• Material definition
– Select e.g. a linear elastic material
• Define a section with a material
• Assign the section to a part
• Assembling parts to a model
• Configure the analysis
– Initial and step-1 (analysis type)
– Boundary condition and load (e.g. by using predefined sets)
– Define output: history and field (size of output and output variable)
• Mesh the model on part or assembly level (independent/dependent)
– 1) mesh-control, 2) seed, 3) element-type, 4) meshing part
• Create and submit analysis job

More beam-theory like 3D model
Boundary condition
Make partition

1)

2) Loading surface
on center plane

Material

7 DTU Wind Energy, Technical University of Denmark Topic 1b, Intro to Abaqus/CAE Spring 2018
Boundary conditions
• The are a number of options but choosing second option give you most
control of what you are doing:

8 DTU Wind Energy, Technical University of Denmark Topic 1b, Intro to Abaqus/CAE Spring 2018
1) Define partition and use for boundary condition
- and thereby allow the boundary to
contract but still avoiding rigid body
movment

Select point and normal and make partition

9 DTU Wind Energy, Technical University of Denmark Topic 1b, Intro to Abaqus/CAE Spring 2018
2) Select middle plane for loading

In order to select interior entities,

remember to turn it off again

Select surface

Define load

Be aware of the questions when you
are making the workshop and
exercise during the exercise time so
you can make screen-dump of
relevant pictures for your report. It is
annoying if you need to redo some
task when you are writing the report.

11 DTU Wind Energy, Technical University of Denmark Topic 1b, Intro to Abaqus/CAE Spring 2018
Define output
• Field output • History output

Reaction force for check of correct loading

12 DTU Wind Energy, Technical University of Denmark Topic 1b, Intro to Abaqus/CAE Spring 2018
Load versus deflection curve (1/5)
