Intro to Abaqus/CAE
1) Workshop: ”AbaW1a-CAEIntro”
2) Exercise 1a -> Report e.g. word or powerpoint
3) Save figures required for the reporting e.g. by
screen dumps and rpt-files during the exercise not
after
Model using:
3-D model
2-D plane stress model
2-D shell model
1-D beam model

Introduction to Abaqus/CAE
Pre-processing
- “Getting Started with Abaqus: Interactive Edition”
• Creating part (2D or 3D)
– Sketch (or import) the geometry of a part
• Material definition
– Select e.g. a linear elastic material
• Define a section with a material
• Assign the section to a part
• Assembling parts to a model
• Configure the analysis
– Initial and step-1 (analysis type)
– Boundary condition and load (e.g. by using predefined sets)
– Define output: history and field (size of output and output variable)
• Mesh the model on part or assembly level (independent/dependent)
– 1) mesh-control, 2) seed, 3) element-type, 4) meshing part
• Create and submit analysis job

Question 1.1
Summery of the cantilever beam model
• Model name: Beam • Mesh control
• Part: 3D, Extrusion – Structured, Hex
– Size 200x25x20 • Element type (Hex)
– Sets: L0, L1 – Linear, Incompatible modes
– Surface: pSurf • Seeds: Global size 10.0
• Material: Linear elastic, isotropic • Mesh the instance
– E=209GPa, ν=0.3 • Field output
• Section: Solid, Homogeneous – E, S, U
• Assign section to part • History output
• Assembly of part to instance – L1: U2
– Dependent (mesh on part) – L0: RF2
• Step: General Static Analysis, • Job: Beam
– Nlgeom: Off
• BC: Initial • Demonstration video (~10 min)
– L0: u1=u2=u3=0 – https://
• Load: Pressure www.youtube.com/watch?v=
– pSurf: p=0.5MPa GuJ4xznyiDA

Boundary conditions
• The are a number of options but choosing second option give you most
control of what you are doing:
8 DTU Wind Energy, Technical University of Denmark Topic 1b, Intro to Abaqus/CAE Spring 2018
1) Define partition and use for boundary condition
- and thereby allow the boundary to
contract but still avoiding rigid body
movment
9 DTU Wind Energy, Technical University of Denmark Topic 1b, Intro to Abaqus/CAE Spring 2018
2) Select middle plane for loading
Select surface
Define load
10 DTU Wind Energy, Technical University of Denmark Topic 1b, Intro to Abaqus/CAE Spring 2018
Be aware of the questions when you
are making the workshop and
exercise during the exercise time so
you can make screen-dump of
relevant pictures for your report. It is
annoying if you need to redo some
task when you are writing the report.

Define output
• Field output • History output
12 DTU Wind Energy, Technical University of Denmark Topic 1b, Intro to Abaqus/CAE Spring 2018
Load versus deflection curve (1/5)
• In history output save RF2 on boundary node-set and U2 at end node-set
14 DTU Wind Energy, Technical University of Denmark Topic 1b, Intro to Abaqus/CAE Spring 2018
Load versus deflection curve (3/5)
• Non-linear RF2 curve as output (here shown for load to P=100MPa)
15 DTU Wind Energy, Technical University of Denmark Topic 1b, Intro to Abaqus/CAE Spring 2018
Load versus deflection curve (4/5)
16 DTU Wind Energy, Technical University of Denmark Topic 1b, Intro to Abaqus/CAE Spring 2018
Load versus deflection curve (5/5)
• Plot as load versus deflection curve
