Portal Frame Structure: Construction - Vi

1. Timber portal frames are cost effective structures made of wood that allow for large open spaces without interior columns. 2. They transfer lateral and bending forces through moment resisting knee joints that connect the portal rafters to the columns. 3. Common materials used to construct timber portal frames include glulam, LVL, plywood, ESL, and OSB which can be manufactured into large beams and boxes. Timber portal frames are suitable for commercial and industrial buildings up to 50m in span.

THE TIMBER PORTAL FRAME :
1.Portal frames are made in variety of shapes and sizes. They are usually made from steel , but can
also be made from concrete or timber. The portal structure is designed in such a way that it has no
intermediate columns , as a result large open area can easily be created within the structure.

2.A planar frame where the lateral and bending forces are transferred by moment resisting
connections (knee joint) from the portal rafters to the columns.

3.Timber portal frames are cost effective , easy accommodation of service such as lighting ,
plumbing and can be erected quickly and efficiently.

4.The overall appearance is aesthetically pleasing.

5.Timber portal frames are particularly suitable for use of high visual impact applications.
DESIGN OF TIMBER PORTAL FRAME

1.Timber portal frames can be built using several types of sawn timbers like Glulam ,
LVL and plywood box beams ,ESL , OSB .

2.Mainly used for commercial and industrial structure.

3.Depending upon the knee joint and member size timber

portal can handle spans upto 50m and above.

4.For large span timber portals steel hinges can be used for efficient erection and added
strength.
5.Steel gusset can also be used to add strength to knee joints.

6.Nailing is very important and set out part of design of structure.

7.Poor nailing can result in failure of structure.

8. Timber portal frames are also able to support large weights on the members.

9.There is a number of different external claddings that can be

applied to a portal frame such as corrugated steel sheet , brick veneer skin and precast tilt
upto concrete panels.
MANUFACTURED TIMBER PORTAL MEMBERS

-LVL(Laminated Veneer Lumber): has high strength on a linear axis, can be manufactured
in large depths and long lengths.
-GLULAM: a versatile member made up of small pieces of timber glued together , that
can be fabricated in large depths, widths, length and formed into a number of shapes.
-PLYWOOD: is often selected to act with other timbers to create a member which shear
stresses must be carried.
-ESL(Engineered Strand Lumber): made from clumps of wood fiber arranged in mainly
in linear pattern and held together in a glue.
-OSB(Oriented Strand Board): a panel product manufactured from thin wafers of wood
held in a glue.
-BOX BEAM: similar to a small stud wall which is covered with plywood.
CONSTRUCTION AND ERECTION

-After construction of footings members erection of frame will begin.

-Once frame has been raised portal columns are fixed into mild steel shoe which have
been bolted to the footing.
-Mild steel shoe prevents the timber from sitting on the concrete which would allow
seeping of water into the timber causing rotting.
-Also creating a solid connection between the timber and the concrete footing.
-After the portal is attached to footings and is free standing gusset plates can be nailed to
knee joint.
-Gusset plates, often steel or plywood, fixed by nails, bolts, or other means to connect
timber members in a truss or other frame structure. Gusset plates may be applied to one or
both side of joint.
