Round Numbers to the

Nearest Thousand and Ten
Thousand
To round numbers, look at the digit to the right of
the rounding digit. Use the following rule to round
up or round down;
a. If the digit is less than 5, keep the rounding digit and the
digits to its left, and replace the digits to the right by zeros
(round down), or

2 364 2 000
b. If the digit is greater than or equal to 5, add one to the
rounding digit and keep the digits to its left (regroup if
necessary), and replace the rest of the digits by zeros.

5 684 6 000
Round off the following numbers to the
highest place value.

1. 4 537 5 000

2. 2 674 3 000
3. 6 335 6 000
4. 2 674 3 000
5. 9 363 9 000
Mang Edgar has an atis
orchard. There are 356 atis
trees in the orchard. If each
tree yields 2 205 fruits, about
how many fruits can Mang
Edgar harvest?
Estimating the Products
1) Round each factor (multiplicand and multiplier) to the
nearest required place value or if not indicated, round to the
highest place value.

2 205 → 2 000 x 356 → 400

2) Multiply the rounded numbers to get the estimated product.
Note: You may apply the rule in multiplying numbers ending
with many zeros.

2 000 → 3 zeros x 400 → 2 zeros

The product of 2 and 4 is 8, then add 5 zeros.

Answer: There are about 800 000 fruits that can be harvested
from the orchard.
Choose the correct estimated product. Box the letter of the
correct answer.

1) 325 x 25
A. 9 000 B. 7 000 C. 8 000 D. 5 000

2) 890 x 32
A. 29 000 B. 28 000 C. 27 000 D. 26 000

3) 1 325 x 45
A. 500 000 B. 50 000 C. 49 000 D. 490 000

4) 5 553 x 231
A. 120 000 B. 12 000 C. 1 200 000 D. 1 100 000

5) 9 999 x 555
A. 6 000 000 B. 600 000 C. 45 000 D. 450 000
Now let us help Mang Leo and
his co- workers. How many
coconuts can they deliver in 23
days if they can deliver 231
coconuts in a day?
