PROCEDURES
 Characteristics of successful Law Office:

 1. Serves its clients effectively and efficiently;

 2. Upholds ethical standards and brings credit to the


legal profession; and

 3. Provides professional satisfaction and a reasonable


economic reward for its owners, managers and
employees.
 Key factors for a successful Law Office

 1. dedicated and qualified professionals

 2. effective law office organizations

 3. sound attorney-client relationships; and

 4. efficient law office procedures.


 Types of Attorney practice:
 1. Sole proprietorship –either practicing in solo or
with an associate lawyers.

 2. Law Partnership – as few as two or three partners.


Decision making is collegial. There are also larger
partnerships wherein a managing partner is
appointed.

 3. General Professional Partnership


 Corporate Legal Department – one of the many
departments in a non-legal corporation. Outside
legal counsels usually represents a corporation
from suits however the following are the
functions of the legal department:
 1. responding to discovery request
 2. coordinating litigation matters with outside counsel.
 3. reviewing (and questioning) bills presented by the
outside counsel; and,
 4. advising management on ways to avoid future lawsuits.
 5. Monitor developments in legislation and coordinates
corporation’s lobbying efforts.
 General counsel- corporation’s lawyer. He can
be a head of the legal department or a retained
outside counsel.
 Legal assistants performs a wide variety of
responsibilities. The Key role of them is preparing
and maintaining the official documents and
records of the corportion, including the following:
 A. Corporate by-laws
 B. minutes of director’s meetings
 C. resolutions adopted by the board of directors
 D. stock registration statements
 E. shareholder records
 F. notices of shareholder meetings
 G. proxy statements
 H. stock option plans
 Paralegals and legal secretaries are part of the
legal team.

 Larger offices- legal team includes law clerks,


legal librarians, paralegal managers.

 Large scale litigation- senior firm partner,


partners and associates.
 Members of a large firm includes:
 1. Law Office managers- generally supervise the
office support staff (receptionists, secretaries, word
processors, file clerks and etc.)

 2. Legal administrators assumes even more


responsibilities, such as taking on a role similar to a
managing partner, other than managing the firm’s
practice of law.
