Ele210 (Network and Measurements Laboratory)

This document describes an experiment to verify the principles of superposition and maximum power transfer using DC sources. Students will use software like VI-LAB and Multisim to apply superposition theorem and determine voltages and currents across components with multiple independent sources. The experiment involves measuring voltages across a resistor R3 under different conditions to validate superposition. It also involves adjusting source impedance components in a circuit to maximize power transferred to the load and verify maximum power transfer theorem. Procedures for simulations in different software are provided.

Practical -01
Verification of Principle of superposition and Maximum Power Transfer
Theorem with DC Sources.
Superposition theorem
• SOFTWARE REQUIRED:VI- LAB, Multisim , PSPICE
• LEARNING OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this experiment is to make
student understand about the different approach available to
determine voltage and current from superposition theorem and
enable him to understand the concept of maximum power across the
load for a given network.
• Superposition Theorem: The voltage and current response of a linear
network to a number of independent sources is the SUM of the
responses obtained by applying each independent source once with
the other independent sources set equal to ZERO. The idea of
superposition rests on the linearity property.
THEORY
• (a) Voltage Measurement using Superposition Principle
Consider the following figure Fig. 1 where we need to find the voltage
across 𝑅3. For this case we consider each independent source
individually and calculate voltages across 𝑅3 accordingly, i.e. VAB and
V''AB . The net voltage across the resistor 𝑅3 is the algebraic sum of
these two voltages which is same as the voltage across 𝑅3 when both the
independent sources work together, i.e. V'AB + V ''AB = V AB .

Perform Practical on Simulator
Procedure:

• Set all the resistances R1, R2 and R3 and choose any arbitrary values of V1 and V2.
• Experiment Part Select:
• Case 1: In presence of both the sources
Select switch of S1 and S2 to power and Simulate the program. Observe the result from case 1 tab.

Case-2: In presence of V1 only

Apply switch S1 to power and S2 to short. Simulate the program. Read ammeter values from Case 2 tab.

Case-3: In presence of V2 only

Apply switch S1 to short and S2 to power. Simulate the program. Read ammeter values from Case 3 tab. Click on 'Fill
data to the table' to update the observation table.

Repeat the above steps to take other observations.

MC-Moving Coil.
DPDT- Double pole Double throw.
N.B.:- All the resistances are in ohms.

power transfer theorem
 Procedure:
1.Apply Supply voltage (Vin = 230v, f = 50Hz) and Choose weather to connect or bypass LSLS and CSCS
by clicking on the corresponding white check box.
(By default they are all connected. 'Tick sign' indicates, the component is bypassed.)

2.Now set the values of different elements of source impedance

(ZSZS) then switch on circuit board to get the voltmeter readings.

3.Case-1 (Only XLXL is adjustable) Choose weather to connect or bypass LLLL and CLCL. \

Adjust them and click on simulate to set XS=−XLXS=−XL. Check if the power transferred to Load(PLPL)
is maximum and check the corresponding efficiency.

4.Case-2 (Only RLRL is adjustable) Adjust RLRL and click on simulate

to set Ra=RLRa=RL. Where; Ra=R2s+(Xs+Xl)2−−−−−−−−−−−−−√Ra=Rs2+(Xs+Xl)2.
Check if the power transferred to Load(PLPL) is maximum and check the corresponding efficiency.

5.Case-3 (Both XLXL and RLRL are adjustable) Choose weather to connect or bypass LLLL and CLCL.

Adjust RLRL and XLXL and click on simulate to set Rs=RLRs=RL and Xs=−XLXs=−XL.
Check if the power transferred to Load(PLPL) is maximum and check the corresponding efficiency.
N.B.: Switch off the supply any time to modify different components of the circuit.
