Lesson 2: Multiplication of Fractions and Mixed Numbers 1 Quarter Week 2 OCTOBER 12, 2020 Mrs. Josephine R. Tauban

This document provides lesson instructions on multiplying fractions and mixed numbers. It begins with examples of multiplying a fraction by another fraction, a fraction by a whole number, and a mixed number by a fraction. It explains to write the product of the numerators over the product of the denominators when multiplying fractions. When multiplying a fraction by a whole number, write the whole number as the numerator over a denominator of 1. It also provides instructions to change mixed numbers to improper fractions before multiplying. The document concludes with sample multiplication problems and a word problem involving multiplying fractions.

LESSON 2 : MULTIPLICATION OF FRACTIONS AND

MIXED NUMBERS
 1ST QUARTER WEEK 2

 OCTOBER 12, 2020

 MRS. JOSEPHINE R. TAUBAN
MULTIPLICATION OF FRACTION BY ANOTHER FRACTION
To multiply fractions, write the product of the numerators over the product of the denominators

__ 3
2 x __ x 3 = __
2_____ 6 6 6 ÷ 6 __1
= Next, simplify: __ = _____ =
3 4 3 x4 12 12 12 ÷ 6 2
MULTIPLICATION OF FRACTION BY A WHOLE NUMBER
1 of 12 apples are 4 apples. Thus, __
__ 1
x 12 = 4
3 3
You may express any whole numbers as a fraction.
2
__ 2 12 = 8
__ Just write the whole number as the numerator over
of 12 apples are 8 apples. Thus, 3 x
3 denominator 1
12 1
__ 12 1
__ x 12__ = 12 = 8
__ therefore : =
As a fraction: 12 1 3 1 3
2 2 12 24
Likewise, __ x 12 = __ x __ = 8
3 3 1 3
MULTIPLICATION OF MIXED NUMBER
To multiply mixed numbers, first change them to improper fractions, and
then multiply the way you multiply fractions. Simplify the product
whenever possible.

= __
5 7
__ 35 35
x = __ Next, reduce ___ into a mixed number
35 3
__ = 4 __
2 4 8 8
8 8
REMEMBER:
>to multiply fractions, get the product of the
numerators and write it over the product of the
denominators
>to multiply mixed numbers, change the mixed
number into an improper fraction then multiply as
usual
>if possible simplify your answers
Get ready with your pens and papers.
Multiply the following. Simplify your answers if
possible.
1. 4 x
