1 - Lecture - Introduction To VLAN and Trunk

This document provides an introduction to VLANs and trunking. It discusses how switches work, the functions of VLANs such as logically grouping users and segmenting broadcast domains. It covers VLAN membership models including static, dynamic, and voice VLANs. It also defines what a trunk is and protocols like 802.1Q tagging. It describes the native VLAN, VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP) modes including server, client, and transparent. Finally, it discusses VLAN pruning to restrict flooded traffic and increase available bandwidth on trunk connections.

Lecture 1:Introduction to

VLAN and Trunk

1
How Switch work

• Each port collision domain

• Broadcast every one
• Communication
• Only one subnet

2
3
Functions of VLAN

• It is switching technology
• Logically group users
• Segmenting broadcast domain
• Access control
• VLAN is a logical broadcast domain
• QoS = IP Phone
• VLAN = Broadcast Domain = Subnet
• Ease of Mgmt. and troubleshooting

4
VLAN Membership

• Static VLAN
• Dynamic VLAN **VLANMembership Policy Server (VMPS)
• Voice VLAN

5
What is Trunk or Tagging
• Cisco term trunk
• IEEE 802.1Q
• Inter – Switch Link (ISL)

6
802.1Q Native VLAN
• 802.1Q does not tag frames for the native VLAN

7
VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP)

8
VTP modes
• Change VLAN DB (5 min update
Server • Send/receive updates
• Save VLAN config

• Cannot change VLAN info

Client •

Send/Receive update
Do not save VLAN Config
Cannot add VLAN

• Cannot change VLAN info

Transparent •

Forwards VTP update
Don’t listen updates
Save VLAN config

9
VLAN Pruning
• Trunk connection is flooding traffic needlessly
• Pruning increases avaliable bandwidth by restricting flooded traffic
