Anatomy and Physiology

● For the Open Exam, mastering anatomy is not critical, but a general understanding
makes it much easier to learn about physiology.

● Focus on Systemic Anatomy, Microscopic Anatomy, Pathological Anatomy, and

Radiographic Anatomy.

● All of the questions asked on the Open Exam will have some context. Mastery of
A&P will allow you to better leverage the context to find the solution more reliably.
Subdivisions of Anatomy

Anatomy

Gross Anatomy Microscopic Anatomy Pathological Anatomy

-regional anatomy -cytology
-systemic anatomy -histology
-surface anatomy
Developmental Anatomy Radiographic Anatomy
-embryology -X ray -ultrasound imaging
-fetology -computed axial tomography
-teratology -positron emission tomography
-magnetic resonance imaging
Systemic Anatomy: examination of all of the structures within
a particular system of the body

A body system consists of structures that are all concerned with

carrying out a specific function of the body
Body Systems

Integumentary Muscular System

System
Skeletal System

Nervous System Endocrine System

Cardiovascular System Lymphatic/Immune Respiratory System
System

Digestive System Urinary System Reproductive System

Microscopic anatomy: anatomical study of structures that need
magnification in order to be seen

Different approaches to microscopic anatomy include cytology

and histology
Cytology: the study of the cells of the body
a cell is the smallest structure that displays the characteristics
of life, including maintaining boundaries, movement, irritability,
metabolism, reproduction and growth

Squamous Cells Skeletal Muscle Cells Adipose Cell

Nerve cells
The cells of the early embryo divide by mitosis to form an organism
containing thousands of billions of cells. During development,
populations of cells begin to exhibit differences in structure and
become specialized in function. This process is called differentiation.

Sperm cell Airway lining

cell

Pluripotent
progenitor
(stem) cell

Skeletal muscle cell Fat cell

Histology: the study of the tissues of the body
a tissue is composed of a group of two or more
cells that have a common function
There are four classes of tissues in the body:

Epithelial Connective
tissue tissue

Muscle Nerve
