 Jamini Roy (11 April 1887 – 24 April 1972) was an
Indian painter.
 He was honored with the State award of Padma
Bhushan in 1955.
 He was most influenced by the Kalighat Pat
(Kalighat painting), which was a style of art with
bold sweeping brush-strokes.
 The Art of Roy inspired by Traditional Indian Folk
and village art& Western methods of paintings
ART CAREER

 In 1934, he received a Viceroy's gold medal in an all India exhibition for one of
his work.
  Jamini Roy's paintings were put on exhibition for the first time in the British
India Street of Calcutta (Kolkata) in 1938.
 In 1946, his work was exhibited in London and in 1953, in the New York City.
 In 1955, he was made the first Fellow of the Lalit Kala Akademi the highest honor
in the fine arts.
 On 11 April 2017 Google India dedicated a Google Doodle to celebrate Roy on
his 130th birthday.

particular work of his is a series of
paintings portrayed across 17 canvases.
 Roy used vegetable colors and pigments
derived from natural elements to narrate
his version of the great Indian epic.
 Displayed in places like the National Art
Gallery of India and the Victoria
Memorial Hall.

 ‘Makara’ is a strange looking sea animal


mentioned in the mythological tales of
ancient India. Roy created this painting in
the year 1945. 
 Most of his paintings revolve around
people, one might wonder what prompted
him to paint this mythological creature.

 Mother and child features the figures of a


son with his head bent and his hands
folded in prayer and his mother, who has
placed her hand on his bent head. This
painting deviates from his usual style by
employing colours that are less dull. The
lines are less emphasised on and there are
no border or motifs surrounding the
subjects.

 A bride dressed in a bright blue sari


flanked by the half-figures of two of her
friends dressed alike, with similar
expressions on their faces. The bride
holds a pot in one hand and with the
other, she holds her ghunghat in
place. Bride and Two Companions is a
tempera painting on card.
