Track Management System For IR

Indian Railways maintains a vast track network with over 1.14 lakh km of track on 64,000 km of routes. Track maintenance is currently done manually through over 1,00,000 paper registers. The proposed Track Management System will digitize track inspection and maintenance data to increase efficiency, consistency and enable data-driven decision making. It will provide a centralized web-based portal accessible over the internet for track officials from JE to Railway Board to record and access track data online. This will eliminate paper records, automate processes and enable real-time tracking of track health and work status.

Track Management System for IR

Track Asset on IR

• 1.14 lac km track on 64,000 km route length

• Turnouts > 86,000

• Joints (Welds, Fishplates, etc.) – 3 crore (appx.)

• Level crossings > 33,500 (one LC in every 2 km)

• Bridges > 1,31,000 (2 bridges in every km)

Resources Deployed in Track Maintenance

• Officials deployed in track maintenance

– Junior Engineers ≈ 3800
– Section Engineers ≈ 2500
– Sub Divisional Engineer ≈ 600
– SrDENs / DENs ≈ 400
Current Practice

Present system of Keeping Track Data

• Each division in IR has 20-30 SE (P.Way) & each PWI owns 35-40
registers to record and maintain track inspection & work data.
• Indian Railways has 68 divisions under total 16 Zonal Railways.
• Total registers > 1,00,000 Appx.

Benefits from TMS

 Intelligent Actionable Reports available Anytime Anywhere

 No Time lag between data gathering and analysis there off
 Better decision making on account of data analysis at different levels of hierarchy
 Prioritization of Works based on inspection results
 Need Based Deployment of Gang and Machine results in optimum resource utilisation
 Comparison of Track Quality Based on TRC & OMS Results
 Defect do not get lost till attended
 Quality of inspection vastly improved
 Overdue Inspections can be monitored
 Up-dated Track Diagram available at all times
 Proactive track maintenance leading to reduced track health related accidents
 Inventory management – warning of stores falling below critical limit
 Message Centre, a unique feature of this application which allows the perfect platform for
collaboration among users at disparate locations
Solution Innovation Considerations

• For the First time section PWIs are being provided Netbooks to do their daily job of
track Inspection

• Use of Eclipse Platform (Lotus Expeditor) to have the ability to work Offline for
recording inspection data . Very critical as Telecom Network coverage is not always
reliable across the IR track length.

• Software based VPN Solution- To Set up secured encrypted VPN tunnel from Offline
terminals to the Data centre to achieve seamless cross-network roaming with
session persistence.

• Data Compression of Lotus Mobile Connect helps to optimize the network

bandwidth requirements- Compression of data up to 40%

• Use of Java Technology for TMS development to ensure platform independence

and application portability.

• Business Continuity Site at Pune , 1500 Km away from CRIS Data centre.
Benefits Beyond Business

Environmental impact Cultural Impact

• Contribution to the Planet Earth by removing 35-40 • This is the first time that technology is reaching the
files that each person right at the bottom of the Railway Task
• PWI holds to input the track maintenance data Force hierarchy, i.e., the Section PWI, who is
responsible for the upkeep of the track.
• Indian Railways has 5000-6000 PWIs across all over
• TMS is being seen as a socially inclusive program
India.
helping to bridge the technology gap in the Railway
• TMS will help to save close to 200 trees a year. Management hierarchy

Social Impact
• The ability to proactively maintain track health which reduces the possibilities of train wreckages attributed to
poor health of the track,
Enhancing passenger safety drastically
• Taxpayers money is protected since track management builds in safe guards for

Rail assets.
