Assignment 1 of Manufacturing Process

This document summarizes the paper manufacturing process. It discusses that paper is made from cellulose fibers extracted from sources like trees and converted to pulp. There are two types of pulp production - mechanical and chemical. The pulp is then combined with water and placed on a paper making machine. The machine contains four sections: the wet end mixes pulp and water, the wet press section removes moisture, the dryer section dries the pulp into a paper sheet using heated rollers, and the calender section smooths the paper using pressure rollers. The finished paper can then have additional materials added to improve quality.

How is Paper Made?
Paper is very important and essential element in our modern life.

Two steps for Paper Production

1.Cellulose fibers are extracted from a variety of sources and converted to pulp.
2.Pulp is combined with water and placed on a paper making machine where it is
flattened, dried, and cut into sheets and rolls.

Raw material for Paper

1.Cotton & Other Natural Fibers.
2. Recycled Fibers
Natural fibire come from trees like Spruce, Pine, Fir, Larch, Hemlock, Eucalyptus, Aspen, Birch.
Recycled Fibers come from paper manufacturing and printing processes, recycled papers (like
newspaper)
How is Paper Pulp Made?
Three main components, which must all be separated from forestry products
to make pulp.
1.Bark 2.Fiber 3.Lignin
Two kinds of Paper Pulp
1.Mechanical Pulp
 In thIs process a giant machine containing a rotating disk are used to
ground up a log. Heat and chemicals are used to aid in this process and
both whole and partial fibers are created.
2. Chemical Pupl
In this process logs are cut into small chunks of wood that are about 1/2" to
1" long, and 1/4" to 1/2" thick. The wood chips are combine with hot water
and chemicals through a giant machine. This helps remove air pockets
from the log. Finally wood chipps around 360 degrees farenheit which
leaves wood fibers, and a liquid called "black liquor."
Paper Making Machine
Generally A Paper machines are comprised of 4 primary sections.
These are:
1.Wet End Wet 2.Press Section 3.Dryer Section 4.Calender
Section

Wet End
In this section Pulp is mixed with water as well as additional
fillers and additives and then pumped onto a belt. This section
ensure the paper grain goes in the right direction.
Wet Press Section
In this section the pulp moves off of the mesh belt onto a felt belt.
Also moisture separation is done here by its own drying station.
Paper Making Machine

Dryer Section
Dryer Section makes the pulp into paper shape and weaves the web of paper
through a series of heated rollers.

Calender Section
This section provide pressure on paper through a rollers and make the paper smooth.
More roller present make the paper more smooth.

Finally paper comes and some material have been added to make this paper more
attractive and qualitative.
