Dstatcom

The document discusses power quality issues and proposes using a D-Statcom device to improve power quality by compensating for voltage sags and swells. It provides background on power quality, lists common power quality problems, discusses power quality standards, and describes how a D-Statcom works and the methodology of simulating a D-Statcom using MATLAB/Simulink to address power quality issues on a multi-bus system.

INTRODUCTION

Power Quality

Power quality can be defined from two different

perspectives,depending on whether you supply or consume
electricity. Power quality at the generator usually refers to the
generator’s ability to generate power at 60 Hz with little variation,
while power quality at the transmission and distribution level refers
to the voltage staying within plus or minus 5 percent.

Examples of poor power quality sources include lightning,

adjustable-speed drives, and loose connections , nonlinear loads,
and poor wiring and grounding.

POWER QUALITY PROBLEMS

1. VOLTAGE SAG
2. VOLTAGE SWELL
3. LONG DURATION OVERVOLTAGES
4. UNDERVOLTAGES
5. TRANSIENTS
6. VOLTAGE UNBALANCE
7. HARMONICS
8. POWER FACTOR
9. FREQENCY DEVIATION
Power Quality Standards
DStatcom
A DSTATCOM is a power quality device, which can protect these industries
against the sags and swells. It can exchange both active and reactive power
with the distribution system by varying the amplitude and phase angle of the
converter voltage with respect to the line terminal voltage.

 D-STATCOM (Distribution Static Compensator), consists of a two-level

Voltage Source Converter (VSC), a dc energy storage device, a coupling
transformer connected in shunt to the distribution network.

The VSC converts the dc voltage across the storage device into a set of three-
phase ac output voltages .The VSC connected in shunt with the ac system
provides a multifunctional topology which can be used for up to three quite
distinct purposes:

1. Voltage regulation and compensation of reactive power;

2. Correction of power factor;
3. Elimination of current harmonics
Methodology

Simulation using Matlab

Testing and validation of results.

Scope at work

Simulation for a multibus system

using ANN based controller.
