What is DATA?
• Originally, data is plural form for “datum”, a Latin
word
• A piece of information.
• Facts and statistics collected together for reference
or analysis.
• Numbers, characters, symbols, images etc., which
can be processed by computer.
• Data must be interpreted, by a human or machine, to
derive a meaning (information)
• So data is meaningless
What is DATABASE?
• A database is a organized collection of data. The
data is typically organized to model aspects of
reality in a way that supports processes requiring
information
• For example: Bank, library
• Database management systems are computer
software applications that interact with the user,
other applications, and the database itself to
capture and analyze data.
• Well-known DBMSs include MySQL,
PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle,
Sybase and IBM DB2
