A database management system (DBMS) allows for coordinated access to a database. It provides tools for users and applications to store, organize and access data in a database. Well-known DBMSs include MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server and Oracle. 3. Databases provide benefits over file systems like coordinated access to shared data, flexible querying of data, storage efficiency and data security features. They aim to make data access fast, simple, accurate, available, complete and shareable for multiple users.

What is DATA?
• Originally, data is plural form for “datum”, a Latin
word
• A piece of information.
• Facts and statistics collected together for reference
or analysis.
• Numbers, characters, symbols, images etc., which
can be processed by computer.
• Data must be interpreted, by a human or machine, to
derive a meaning (information)
• So data is meaningless
What is DATABASE?
• A database is a organized collection of data. The
data is typically organized to model aspects of
reality in a way that supports processes requiring
information
• For example: Bank, library
• Database management systems are computer
software applications that interact with the user,
other applications, and the database itself to
capture and analyze data.

PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle,
Sybase and IBM DB2
