Arithmetic
Percentage: derived from the word percent, which means out of 100

1. a % of b = (a/100)* b

2. a is what % of b = (a/b) * 100

3. Percentage shortcuts:

1 / 2 = 50% 1 / 6 = 16.67% 1 / 10 = 10 %
1 / 3 = 33% 1 / 7 = 14.28%
1 / 4 = 25% 1 / 8 = 12.5%
1 / 5 = 20 % 1 / 9 = 11.11 %

Arithmetic
Percentage: derived from the word percent, which means out of 100

4. Percentage change:

Initial…………………Final
Change = Final –Initial
% change = [(Final – Initial)/ Initial] * 100

5. Multiplying factor:
Initial: A
X% increase
Final: A * [1+(X/100)]

And if X% decrease
Final: A * [1-(X/100)]

Percentage: Approximation:

1. 6.25% of 64?

2. 55.55% of 45?

3. 7.14% of 42?

4. 35% of 120?

5. 65% of 360?

6. 66.66 % of 243?

Arithmetic
Ratio and Proportion:

1. Ratio is denoted by a:b = a/b

2:3 = 2/3

2. If two values are in the ratio of a:b = we can take values as ax, bx
2:3 two values can be taken as 2x, 3x

3. Break A in the ratio of a:b

one value will be [(a*A)/ (a+b)] and other value will be [ (b*A)/ (a+b)]

break 100 in the ratio of 2:3

4. Comparing ratios:
Which value is greater: 8/9 or 10/11 ?

Arithmetic
Ratio and Proportion:
5. Combining ratios:
If A: B = 2:3 and B:C = 4:5. Find A:B:C ??

6. Proportion:
a:b :: c: d…..it implies ……a/b = c/d

7. Proportion:
Types of proportion:
a. Direct proportion
A directly proportional to B
A1/A2 = B1/B2

b. Inverse proportion
A inversely proportional to B
A1*B1 = A2*B2

Arithmetic
Profit and Loss:

S.P = Selling price

C.P = Cost Price
M.P = Mark Price
D = Discount

Profit = S.P – C.P

Profit % = [(S.P – CP)/ C.P] * 100

Loss = C.P – S.P

Loss % = [(C.P – S.P)/ C.P] * 100

Discount = M.P – S.P

Discount % = [(M.P – S.P)/ M.P] * 100

Arithmetic
Interest:
Interest: Compound interest and Simple interest
P = Principal
R = Rate of interest
T = Time (in years)
A = Amount
S.I = Simple interest
C.I = Compound interest

1. In case of simple interest:

S.I = [(P*R*T)/ 100 ]
A = P+ S.I

2. In case of compound interest:

C.I = A – P
A = P * [(1+(R/100))] ^ T

Arithmetic
Time, speed and distance:
T = Time D = S* T
S = Speed S = D/T
D = Distance T = D/ S

• Average speed = Total distance travelled / Total time taken

• Average speed shortcut:
If a person goes from A to B with a speed of x and comes back from B to A with a speed of y. Then
average speed for the whole journey is given by [(2*A*B) / (A+B)]

• Relative speed:
a. If two persons are travelling in same direction, then relative speed is given by A- B
T = D/ (A-B)
b. If two persons are travelling in opposite direction, then relative speed is given by A+ B
T = D/ (A+B)

CRACKMATH: LESSON 2: ARITHMETIC: SLIDE 9
Arithmetic

Work, rate and time:

T = Time W = T* R
W = Work R = W/T
R = Rate T = W/ R

• If persons A, B takes x, y days respectively to complete a work when working separately. If both of
them are working together then the work will be completed in [(x*y) / (x+y) ]

• Men – Days Efficiency:

M1= number of persons working in case 1, D1= Amount of time taken to complete a work in case 1, W1=
Amount of work in case 1
M2 = number of persons working in case 2, D2= Amount of time taken to complete a work in case 2, W2=
Amount of work in case 2
Formula: [(M1*D1)/ W1] = [(M2*D2)/W2
