Arruda - Boyce Hyperelastic Model

The Arruda-Boyce hyperelastic model captures the large deformation behavior of rubber-like materials using an eight chain network model within a unit cell. The model has two material parameters - the rubber modulus G and the number of rigid links per chain n. It can predict the stress-strain behavior of rubbers under both uniaxial and equibiaxial extension accurately based on experimental data from Treloar (1944). The model provides a mathematically simple yet accurate way to model large deformations in rubbers.

ARRUDA – BOYCE

HYPERELASTIC MODEL
INTRODUCTION
 There are various theories and constitutive models are available which capture deformation response of rubber
like materials at large strains.
 But some models fails to capture the deformation response of rubbers under different deformation states and
requires change of model parameters for each deformation state.
 Some of the models possesses mathematical complexity , some requires more material parameters to define the
deformation response.
 Good Constitutive Model should possess –

1. Minimum number of model parameters

2. Parameters should be obtained from small number of experiments.
3. Mathematical Simplicity
4. Able to capture response of rubber like materials under different deformation states
 Arruda and Boyce developed a three dimensional constitutive model which is able to capture response of
rubbery materials under large deformation.

2
Eight Chain Model

•Model uses unit cell approach.

• Eight chains are arranged at eight corners
of cube from its centre.
ao •So deformation response of eight chains
are averaged to give overall response.
• Each chain has ‘n’ rigid links of length ‘l’.
• Each chain has undeformed length given
ao
as,

• Cube dimensions are given as,

3
 After the deformation , deformed length
of each chain becomes,

 Hence stretch of each chain

Figure : Deformed state of model

4
 So strain energy density of proposed model for isotropic , incompressible material is
given as,

where , N= Number of chains present per unit volume

k= Boltzmann’s Constant
T = Temperature

 Proposed model has two model constants , one is rubbery modulus G= NkT

and other is ‘n’.

Equations

 Uniaxial Extension

Eight chain model in Undeformed State Eight chain model in Uniaxial Extension

Stretches in uniaxial extension deformation mode is given as,

6
Nominal stress in extension direction is calculated as,

Derivation of Strain energy density function w.r.t first stretch invariant is given as

Derivation first stretch invariant w.r.t stretch is given as for uniaxial extension

7
 So nominal stress becomes,

 Equibiaxial Extension

8
 Stretches in Equibiaxial extension deformation mode is given as,

 Similarly , nominal stress given as,
