Project Defence: Assessment of Fire Safety Preparedness of Technical Universities
Project Defence: Assessment of Fire Safety Preparedness of Technical Universities
PROJECT DEFENCE
Thus this study is aimed at assessing the level of fire safety preparedness of technical
universities (a case of Accra Technical University).
www.atu.edu.gh
PROBLEM STATEMENT
Due to the quite popular non-maintenance and “wait till something happens” attitude of
Ghanaians, most technical universities including the case under study, the Accra Technical
university have inadequate fire safety equipment installed. Despite the fact that the
school is in close proximity with the Ghana National Fire Service, there are inadequate
fire safety policies in the school.

AIM OF THE STUDY
This project is carried out to assess the level of preparedness of Technical Universities
in the event of a fire outbreak, the case of Accra Technical University.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
1. To assess the level of preparedness among students in the Accra Technical
University campus in the event of fire outbreak.

METHODOLOGY
The research method used for this project is both qualitative and quantitative in
nature.

FINDINGS
To assess the level of preparedness among students in the Accra Technical University
campus in the event of fire outbreak.
It was found out that only eight (8) out of the thirty respondents were either moderately
or highly prepared, the rest were either not prepared, slightly prepared or neutral.
This shows out that the level of fire safety preparedness of students was low

FINDINGS
To assess the availability of firefighting equipment on technical university campuses
(Accra Technical University)
On the electrical block two fire extinguishers were available with 9 fire alarms located near
the stair areas. On the fashion block three extinguishers were observed with three fire
alarms. The SLT block had the most fire extinguishers with most of them in the labs and 4
sand buckets kept at the entrance of the labs.
It was found out that not all essential fire safety equipment, including sand buckets, fire
extinguishers, smoke detectors and fire were present and those available were in limited
quantities.

FINDINGS
To assess the level of knowledge and usage of firefighting equipment by students and
mem.

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMEDATIONS
The survey revealed that the level of preparedness of students in the occurrence of fire
outbreak was low and most students had low knowledge of the use of fire fighting
equipment.
Lastly the study revealed that the best ways to increase the fire safety preparedness of
students included:
• Installation of more firefighting equipment
• Regular inspection of firefighting equipment
• Training programmes on the use of firefighting equipment
• Provision of assembly point during fire outbreak.
• Fire evacuation plans
• Public education on fire safety
• Accessibility of fire hydrants
• Replacement of non-functioning smoke detectors and other firefighting equipment
