Modeling of Regenerative Braking System

The document summarizes a student project modeling regenerative braking systems. It includes sections on conventional braking that wastes energy as heat, regenerative braking that stores braking energy, two types of regenerative braking systems, vehicle and tire parameters used in the mathematical model, components in the Simulink model, and results showing speed, current, torque, slip, state of charge, and voltage. The project was conducted by four students under the guidance of a professor to mathematically model and simulate regenerative braking.

What are Brakes?
• A brake is a device that
decelerates a moving object or
prevents it from accelerating.
• It transfer Rotational +
Translation energy to other form
of energy
Conventional Braking:
• It uses friction to counteract forward momentum of the vehicle.
• Kinetic energy heat energy (lost to air)
• Approximately 30% of the engines generated power is wasted as heat.
Regenerative Braking:

• Braking torque applied by the

motor/generator with
production of energy.
• Stored energy can be reused.
Regenerative Braking:

• Two Types:
1) Serial regenerative braking.
2) Parallel regenerative braking.
