Objectives:
At the end of this session students will be able to:
1. learn/identify the difference between singular and plural nouns.
2. Enlist /implement singular and plural at its appropriate place.
3. Utilize it in their context/daily routine.
Singular/Plural
In English, we form the plurals of nouns by adding –s to the singular.
Examples are given below.
o Boy -> boys
o Girl -> girls
o Book -> books
o Toy -> toys
o Star -> stars
o Flower -> flowers
o Spoon -> spoons
Singular/Plural
There are several exceptions to this rule. Nouns ending in –s, -sh, -ch and –x,
form their plurals by adding –es to the singular.
Examples are:
o Box -> boxes
o Class -> classes
o Branch -> branches
o Brush -> brushes
o Watch -> watches
o Torch -> torches
o Fox -> foxes
o Glass -> glasses

Mostnouns ending in –o, generally form their
plurals by adding –es.
Examples are:
o Mango -> mangoes
o Hero -> heroes
o Potato -> potatoes
o Volcano -> volcanoes

Some singular nouns ending in –o, form
their plurals by simply adding –s.
Examples are:
o Piano -> pianos
o Photo -> photos
o Stereo -> stereos

Nouns ending in a consonant + -y, form
their plurals by changing that –y into –i and
adding –es.
o Baby -> babies
o Lady -> ladies
o City -> cities

Mostnouns ending in –f or –fe form their
plurals by changing –f or –fe into v and
adding –es.
o Leaf -> leaves
o Life -> lives
o Thief -> thieves
