Site of The First Mass

The first Catholic mass in the Philippines was held on March 31, 1521 on Easter Sunday along the shores of what was referred to as "Mazaua" in the journals of Antonio Pigafetta. Accounts state that Friar Pedro Valderrama celebrated mass with Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan and his men. While some sources say the mass was held in Masao, Butuan City, most primary sources, including Pigafetta's journal and map, indicate it took place in Limasawa Island, Southern Leyte based on place name evidence and Republic Act no. 2733.
