BASIC OPERATIONS OF A COMPUTER

(HEALTH AND SAFETY)

BY D.KAIRA
COMPUTER STUDIES GRADE 8
ANSWERS FOR THE PREVIOUS EXERCISE

1. Define the term User Interface.

A user interface is a combination of hardware and software
that helps people and computers to communicate with each
other.
ANSWERS FOR THE PREVIOUS EXERCISE

1. Identify and explain the key features of a GUI.

 Windows: windows display a computer program that divides the screen into
small portions.
 Icons: Icons denote small pictures that represent computer programs, files
and commands.
 Menu: allows the user to select various programs to run.
 Pointer: This refers to a symbol on a display screen that a user moves to
select commands, programs and objects.
ANSWERS FOR THE PREVIOUS EXERCISE

1. Write down the major difference between

GUI and CLI.
 GUI is easier for non- technical people and Suitable for disabled
People (hearing and visual) while CLI is difficult and confusing to non-
technical people and they need to learnt a lot of codes.
SPECIFIC OUTCOMES
AT THE END OF THIS LESSON, PS:

 Know the correct posture to avoid injuries.

 Demonstrate the need to take care of computers to prevent data loss.
What is Health?
This is a state of well-being or being
free from diseases.
What is Safety
 This is a state of being free from Danger.
 Misuseof computers can cause hazard of
health problems to the computer user.
Therefore, it is very important at all cost to
avoid such problems.
HOW CAN WE MAINTAIN
HEALTH AND SAFETY?
HOW CAN WE MAINTAIN HEALTH AND
SAFETY?
 Ensure correct posture is maintained (i.e. Correct angle of
arms to the keyboard and mouse)
 Securing power cables and avoiding liquids and dust near
computers.
 Sequence of powering up and down of various
technologies(i.e. TVs, cell phone, printer, scanner)
 Check insulation on wires regularly
 Do not allow drinks near computers
HOW CAN WE MAINTAIN HEALTH AND
SAFETY?
 Check equipment regularly
 Cover wires and/or have them neatly tucked away (under
desks, etc.)
 Ensure good ventilation in the room, again to stop
overheating of hardware
 Do not overload sockets with too many items
 Don’t cover equipment vents, which can cause equipment
to overheat
HOW CAN WE MAINTAIN HEALTH AND
SAFETY?
 Have a fully tested fire extinguisher nearby (not water
extinguishers!)
 Use cable ducts to make the wires safe
 Ensure that there is no screen flicker, since this can lead
to eye problems
HEALTH RISKS

 Back and neck problems/strain

HEALTH RISK

 Repetitive strain injury (RSI) – damage to

fingers and wrists
HEALTH RISK
Eyestrain (caused by staring at a
computer screen too long or bad lighting
in the room)
HEALTH RISK

 Headaches
HEALTH RISK
 Ozone irritation (dry skin,
respiratory problems, etc.) – this is
caused by laser printers in an
office area
SAFETY RISKS
Electrocution
SAFETY RISKS
Trailing wires (trip
hazard)
SAFETY RISKS

Heavy equipment falling

SAFETY RISKS
CARE FOR COMPUTERS
 Computers should be cared for at all the time to
avoid mal-function of them. All computer users
should do:
CARE FOR COMPUTERS
 install Anti-Virus Software
 perform regular software updates
 run computer maintenance
 backup files
 keep your keyboard crumb free
 clean the screen
 remove dust from vents and fans
 use a surge protector
 avoid extreme temperatures
CARE FOR COMPUTERS
carry laptops in cases
get rid of unused programs
avoid eating near computers
consider reformatting
safely remove devices
activate the firewall
Place your computer in a room that is both cool and dry. Heat and humidity
are hard on electronics
Make sure that there is ample air space around the PC to enable it to have a
free airflow
but avoid draft and dusty areas.
Avoid powering the system on and off frequently, it puts stress on its
electronics.
EXERCISE

 What are the common health problems

associated with the use of computers?
 Briefly
describe ways to prevent health
problems associated with computer use.
 Whatare the safety issues associated with
computer use?
