Transpo Report

This document discusses different classifications related to transportation engineering and elements of transportation systems. It describes: 1) Functional classifications including traffic engineering, public transportation, transport planning, transport economics, and pavement engineering. 2) Elemental classifications which are the basic components of any transportation system, including the driver, vehicle, way, control, terminal, and user. 3) Definitions of each classification and their roles in transportation systems.

Functional Classification

• Traffic Engineering
- is a branch of civil engineering that uses engineering techniques to
achieve the safe and efficient movement of people and goods on
roadways
• Public Transportation
- is a system of transport for passengers by group travel systems
available for use by the general public
• Transport Planning
- is the process of defining future policies, goals, investment, and designs
to prepare for future needs to move people and goods to destinations
• Transport Economics
-is the study of the movement of people and goods over space and time.
It is a branch of economics that deals with the allocation of resources within
the transport sector
• Pavement Engineering
-is a branch of civil engineering that uses engineering techniques to
design and maintain flexible (asphalt) and rigid (concrete) pavements. This
includes streets and highways and involves knowledge of soils, hydraulics,
and material properties
Elemental Classification
• Driver
- Every mode of transportation has a driver who controls the vehicle
used in that mode of transportation. This element assumes maximum
importance in the roadways where a tremendously large number of drivers
interact with each other and the facilities.
• Vehicle
- A thing used for transporting people or goods.
• Way
-Every mode of transportation uses a specified path which is either
constructed or charted.
• Control
- Supervision of the movement of people, goods, or vehicles to
ensure efficiency and safety. In order to ensure safety and efficiency of
operation, there are system level controls which are imposed on the
vehicles.
• Terminal
- station where transport vehicles load or unload passenger or
goods. This is a location where the vehicles of a mode stop for various
reasons including boarding (loading) and alighting (unloading) of
passengers (goods).
• User
-Obviously any transportation systems runs to provide service to its
users. The users are the public at large for transportation mode which
cater to passenger transport or organizations for transportation modes
which cater to goods transport.
