Communication Satellite: Rubaya Khatun Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering

This document discusses communication satellites. It describes how communication satellites relay and amplify radio signals between transmitters and receivers on Earth. There are over 2,000 communication satellites currently in orbit used by private and government organizations. The document outlines the basic structure of communication satellites, including their communication payload, station keeping subsystem, power subsystem, and command and control subsystem. It also discusses the different types of communication satellites and their applications, advantages and disadvantages.

INTRODUCTION
 A communications satellite is an artificial satellite that relays and amplifies
radio telecommunications signals via a transponder; it creates a
communication channel between a source transmitter and a receiver at
different locations on Earth.
• There are 2,134 communications satellites in Earth's orbit, used by both
private and government organizations.

• The concept of the geostationary communications satellite was first

proposed by Arthur C. Clarke, along with Vahid K. Sanadi building on
work by Konstantin Tsiolkovsky. In October 1945, Clarke published an
article titled "Extraterrestrial Relays" in the British magazine Wireless
World

STRUCTURE
Communications Satellites are usually composed of the following
subsystems:

composed of transponders, antennas, and switching systems engines used to
Communication Payload bring the satellite to its desired orbit

keeps tracked and stabilized subsystems which are used to keep the
Station satellite in the right orbit

used to power the Satellite systems, normally composed of solar cells, and
Power subsystem batteries that maintain power during solar eclipse

Command and Control subsystem ●

which maintains communications with ground control stations
TYPES OF COMMUNICATION
SATELLITE
Passive satellites: receive the electromagnetic signal from
the source or transmitter and redirect it towards the
receiver or destination.
Active satellites: An active satellite is a satellite that
receives the signal from the source, amplifies the signal,
and redirects the signal towards the receiver.
WORKING
ADVANTAGES
The coverage area of a satellite is greatly large
Higher Bandwidths are available for use.
Transmission cost of a satellite is independent of the distance from the
center of the coverage area

Satellite to satellite communication is very precise

DISADVANTAGES
Launching satellites into orbit is costly.

Satellite bandwidth is gradually becoming used up.

There is a larger propagation delay in satellite communication than in

terrestrial communication.
APPLICATIONS

 Satellite phone
 Satellite television
 Satellite radio for radio broadcasting
 Amateur radio satellite
 Satellite Internet access
 Communication satellite also can be used in military
for security purposes. For example United Kingdom
satellites etc.
CONCLUSION

Communication Satellites are becoming day by day best media

to communicate throughout the world.
