Executive Summary

• A fire broke out at Churihatta, Chawk Bazar Dhaka,


Bangladesh on 20th February, 2019 approximately at
10:38 pm. The fire had come under control after 12 hours
at 11:00am on 20th February, 2019.  
• Local media reported that up to at least 71 people were
killed and 50 others injured.
• Chawk Bazar police station, said 67 bodies have been
kept at the morgue. Of which, 58 are men; five women
and the rest of them are children
Introduction
• Dhaka is a capital of Bangladesh and Old Dhaka is a famous place of
Dhaka city.
• It was founded in 1608 as Jahangir Nagar, the capital of Mughal
Bengal.
 
Old Dhaka's Chawkbazar is a testimony to a disturbing fact that, the
2010 Nimtoli fire tragedy could not raise the level of awareness
sufficiently among many of Old Dhaka residents about the dangers
of storing and trading in inflammable chemicals in the densely
populated localities.

Facts and Purpose
• Fire started in a road accident between a pickup van and a private car. After the
collision the private car's gas cylinder exploded.
• The fire then spread to a group of buildings being used to store chemicals and
quickly expanded to nearby buildings in the densely packed historic Chowk Bazar
of Old Dhaka.

• An electric transformer exploded just after the fire broke, which demolished
several cars parked on the alley. The alley was full of people because of a wedding
ceremonyin a nearby community center. The fire left at least 71 people dead and
50 others injured.

• Haji Md Salahuddin, an eyewitness who was also injured, told the Dhaka Tribune
said he was sitting on a rickshaw on Nanda Kumar Lane when he heard an
explosion from above. He said: “I think a power transformer exploded and the
sparks flew inside the warehouse of plastic products, leading to a bigger explosion
and massive fire.”
Description of Accident
Chawk Bazar is one of the most important areas in Old Dhaka, a historic district
established about 400 years ago during the Mughal dynasty. On the morning of the national
holiday yesterday, many people woke up to find their Facebook friends
“marking themselves safe from Chawkbazar fire”

According to media reports, there are more than 25,000 chemical warehouses in
Old Dhaka, of which around 15,000 are in residential buildings. Fire service officials
said only around two percent storehouses have permission from the city
corporation.
conclusion
Old Dhaka is the place where most of the warehouse are in residential buildings
and
they store chemicals ,plastic goods and perfume with the help of these chemical
within some moment the fire quickly expanded to nearby buildings in the densely
packed historic Chawk Bazar of Old Dhaka. The fire left at least 71 people dead and
50 others injured and many became homeless.
RECOMMENDATION

 The government need to take action against those are responsible


for making sure that there were no illegal chemical warehouses in
Old Dhaka.
 The business man need proper training about business ethics.
 Need to allocate separate area to set up chemical warehouse zone
