Lesson 7C SPM Task Types

There are six main task types in Microsoft Project 2013: fixed units, fixed duration, fixed work, effort driven, and non-effort driven. Fixed units tasks keep resource units fixed, fixed duration keeps duration fixed, and fixed work keeps work fixed. Effort driven tasks adjust duration when resources change to keep total work constant, while non-effort driven adds new resource work to existing work. The task type determines how changes to work, duration, and resources are calculated to maintain the balance of one fixed component.

TASK TYPES
Tasks Types
1. Tasks Overview
2. Fixed Units
3. Fixed Duration
4. Fixed Work
5. Effort Driven
6. Non Effort Driven
1-Tasks Overview
There are three variables which affect the each task in project
plan. They are Work, Duration and Units.

Work is the amount of effort, measured in time units (like hours

or days), that a resource needs to complete the task. The total
work for a task is the sum of all those time units, no matter how
many resources are assigned to the task.

Duration is the length of working time between the start and

finish of a task. Project bases the calculation of a task's duration
on the amount of work and the amount of resource units
assigned to it. The working time for a task is defined by the
project calendar, resource calendar, task calendar, or any custom
calendars you set for a project.
1-Tasks Overview
Resource Units indicate how much of a resource's available time,
according to the resource calendar, is being used to work on a
particular task. Resources are the people, equipment, or other
materials that are applied to completing a task. In a project
schedule, resource effort is expressed as assignment units or
sometimes just as units.
Project is constantly working to keep the following equation in balance
on task: - Work = Duration * Units

Microsoft Project 2013 uses one of three task types to calculate the
duration of tasks and subsequently their finish dates.
• Fixed Units
• Fixed Work
• Fixed Duration
1-Tasks Overview
The task type determines how project goes about keeping it in
balance. It is dependent on one of the 3 components being fixed.

In your project plan, one of the below three variables always be

“Fixed”, which means it can not be changed when the other two
variables change. There are three settings on the Task Type can
be define on task.
1-Tasks Overview
• How to define task
type:
On the View tab,
click Gantt Chart
• In the Task Name
field, select the task
whose task type you
want to change
• Click Task
Information, and
then click the
Advanced tab
• In the Task type box, Note:-If you click Fixed Work in the Task type box, you cannot
click the task type change the Effort driven setting for the task.
you want to set You can view and change the task type for each task directly in
your view by inserting the Type column.
2-Fixed Units
A task in which the assigned units (or resources) are a fixed value
and any changes to the amount of work or the task's duration does
not affect the task's units.

This means that adding Work or Duration to the task will not affect
the Units. In this case, adding Work will increase the Duration of the
task, and vice versa. Fixed Units and Fixed Work are most commonly
used Task Types because they represent most project realities.

On Fixed Units task, units will be fixed. If you change the work,
duration will be changed.

MS Project uses fixed units by default.

3-Fixed Duration
On Fixed Duration task, duration will be fixed. If you change the
units, work will be changed,

This means that adding Work or Units (Resources) to the task

will not affect the Duration.

4-Fixed Work
On Fixed Work task, work will be fixed. If you change the units,
duration will be changed.

This means that increasing Duration or Units (Resources) to the task

will not affect the Work.

5-Effort Driven Tasks
• Effort-driven means that when you assign or remove
people from a task, Project lengthens or shortens the
duration of the task based on the amount of resource
units assigned to it, but it doesn't change the total
amount of work for the task.
• When you add or delete resources on an effort-driven
task, work is spread around equally among resources.
• You can turn off the Effort Driven setting if you choose the
fixed-duration or fixed-units task type. With the fixed-
work task type selected, the Effort Driven setting isn’t only
turned on automatically, but in fact it can’t be turned off.
Effort Driven
6-Non Effort Driven Tasks
• If the task is non-effort driven, project assumes that
the work of a newly assigned resource to be added
to the existing work of all other named resources.
