Home Monitor Arduino Ultrasonic

This proposal describes the design and implementation of an ultrasonic radar system using an Arduino board. The system uses ultrasonic sensors to detect objects, measure their distance, and calculate the angle. It aims to reduce human time and effort through continuous scanning. The radar provides real-time distance and angle measurements of any obstacles detected. It has advantages like low cost, independence from lighting conditions, and ease of use with microcontrollers.

Abstract
Radar is an electronic device which utilizes electromagnetic waves to determine the
altitude, range, direction, or speed of both moving and immovable objects. In
contrast, ultrasonic waves are used instead of electromagnetic waves in ultrasonic
radar. The low power consumption , low cost and ease of implementation are
considered the main features of the ultrasonic radar to be devoted in sever al
applications such as security purposes, object detection and avoidance systems in
robotics. This work presents a design and implementation of ultrasonic radar for
distance measurements. The effectiveness of the proposed design is measured using
a statistical analysis of the distance error between the radar and the obstacles. The
results obtained for all types of obstacles are tabled and graphed to prove that a very
small error can be achieved using the proposed design.

INTRODUCTION

RADAR is an object detection system which uses radio waves to

determine the range, altitude, direction, or speed of objects. Radar
systems come in a variety of sizes and have different performance
specifications. Some radar systems are used for air-traffic control at
airports and others are used for long range surveillance and early-
warning systems. A radar system is the heart of a missile guidance
system. Small portable radar systems that can be maintained and
operated by one person are available as well as systems that occupy
several large rooms.
Objectives
1. To develop an ultrasonic RADAR.
2. To detect the fixed or moving object.
3. To measure the distance of the object from the system.
4. To measure the angle of the moving object.
5. Reducing human time and effort.
Methodology
The primary objective of this project is to determine an objects position
on a coordinate axis using ultrasonic sensors. An ultrasonic sensor is
used to send out a high frequency sound waves and record the time it
takes for the reflected sound to return. The sensor then uses the time to
calculate the distance the object is from the sensor.
Required Components:
We divided the required components into two parts.
Hardware:
Arduino UNO
HC-SRo4 Ultrasonic Sensor
TowerPro SGgo Servo Motor
Mounting Bracket for Ultrasonic Sensor (it is optional)
Connecting Wires
Jumper Cables
5V Power Supply
USB Cable for Arduino
• Software
Arduino IDE.
Processing Application.

Features
• This Arduino sonar project system continuously scans the area and
gives a beep sound on detecting an object, simultaneously, the radar
provides the angle as well as distance of the object from the source.
• It makes use of an ultrasonic wave to simulate sonar or radar sweep.
Advantages
• It is not affected by color or transparency. Basically, the Ultrasonic
Sensors transmit the sound off of the object, hence the color and
transparency have no effect on the radar reading.
• Any dark environments have no effect on this Arduino radar sensor’s
detection procedure. So, it can also use at night.
• Easy to design and low price. The ultrasonic sensors are available at
the market with very cheap price.
• The Ultrasonic sensor can easily interface with any types of the
microcontroller.
• It has a self-cleaning system to continue running and less downtime.
• This radar sensor is not affected by dust, rain, snow, and many more.
Limitations
• Height of object cannot be determined.
• 3D mapping of object is not possible.
• The range depends upon the characteristics of the sensor.
• Cannot work in a vacuum.
• Not designed for underwater use.
CONCLUSION
This project aims on the use of Ultrasonic Sensor by connected to the
Arduino UNO R3 board and the signal from the sensor further provided
to the screen formed on the laptop to measure the presence of any
obstacle in front of the sensor as well as determine the range and angle
at which the obstacle is detected by the sensor. For this screen, we use
Processing 2 software by Ben Fry and Casey Rease, Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, Cambridge. Also, in addition to it, a set of
LED’s connected through the shift register and a buzzer also tells about
the range of the obstacle. According to the range of the object, the
