DBTT and Cryogenic Temperature: Pro R&D PVT LTD

The document discusses cryogenic temperatures and ductile to brittle transition temperature (DBTT). It defines the cryogenic temperature range as between -150°C and -273°C, where some materials may experience a transition from ductile to brittle behavior. DBTT is explained as the minimum temperature at which a material can absorb energy without fracturing. Impact tests are used to experimentally determine the DBTT, below which ductile materials will fail to absorb impact energy and exhibit brittle fracture instead of ductile behavior.

Cryogenic

• The cryogenic temperature range has been defined as from −150 °C

(−238 °F) to absolute zero (−273 °C or −460 °F), the temperature at
which molecular motion comes as close as theoretically possible to
ceasing completely.

• In the cryogenic temperature range some materials might show Ductile

to Brittle Transition Temperature.

Ductile to Brittle Transition Temperature

The ductile brittle transition temperature is the minimum temperature in

which a given material has the ability to absorb a specific amount of energy
without fracturing.

DBTT

• Ductile material shows brittle fracture if it is not absorbing the impact

energy. Its toughness is reduced

• Imact tests such as Charpy, Izod tests are used to find DBTT
experimentally
