Mary mother of the church
• One of the happiest
experiences a
person can feel is
the love of a
mother.
• Most of us manage
to go through life
gracefully because
we have our mother
by our side.
• We Filipino
Catholic
Christians
are known
as a people
who has a
special love
and devotion
to Mary.
• A Spanish original
song from Mr.
Emeterio Barcelon’s
and Fr. Norberto
Carceller’s 1937
International
Eucharistics
Congress’ official
hymn was entitled
Pueblo Amante de
Maria.
Pueblo Amante de Maria.
Pueblo Amante de Maria.
•A people who love Mary or a
people in love with Mary.
•This title describes our special
relationship with Mary as our
mother.
•Who gave us
Mary to be our
mother?
•John the
Evangelist
• When Jesus saw his mother there, and the
disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said
to her, “Woman,[a] here is your son,” 27 and to
the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that
time on, this disciple took her into his home.
• Nang makita ni Jesus ang kanyang ina na
nakatayo roon katabi ng minamahal niyang
tagasunod, sinabi niya, “Babae, ituring mo
siyang anak.” 27 At sinabi naman niya sa
tagasunod niya, “Ituring mo siyang ina.” Mula
noon, tumira na ang ina ni Jesus sa tahanan ng
tagasunod na ito.
Mary is Aptly given the title “MOTHER OF THE CHURCH”
BECAUSE
• As “Mother of Jesus Christ,
“ she is Mother of the Head
of the Church, His mystical
Body, and thus mother of
all members of His Body,
all His disciples. Therefore
as disciples of Christ and
as members of His body,
we have Mary as our
Spiritual mother.
• As associate in
Christ’s saving work,
“Mary” cooperated in
an utterly singular
way by her
obedience, faith,
hope and burning
charity in the work of
savior”
• Mary has been present at the very
beginning of the Church.
• At the Annunciation, she gave her humble
consent in purity of heart and allowed the
Son of God to take flesh in her virginal
womb.
• At Pentecost, Mary was quietly present
among the apostles.
• And since that time, Mary has been and
remains to be an inspiring part of the life
• Jesus knew how important a mother is for each person
and He gave us His very own mother to be our spiritual
mother.
• As the Mother of God, our love for Mary cannot be
separated from our love for Jesus.
• However, true devotion to Mary should bring us to a
closer relationship with her son, Jesus.
Pope Benedict XVI tells us in his first encyclical Deus Caritas Est:
• Pedro Calungsod (also called
“Joven Bisayo” as
seventeenth century
documents state) was about
13 or 14 years old when he
left the Philippines to join
Jesuit priests who were
starting a new mission in
Guam.
• With him were sixteen
other Filipinos, mostly
teenagers, too, who
served as catechists,
sacristans, bearers of
Mass kits and provision
bags during the priests’
mission journeys, and
the like.
•They lived together in a
community with priests and
soldiers.
•They served without pay, having
devoted themselves to the
cause of the LORD.
• Fr. Diego Luis de San Vitores,
S.J., mission superior of the
Jesuits in the Marians Islands,
and Pedro Calungsod were
teaching catechism to children
and adults gathered at a
beach when they were slain by
two natives.
• A native chieftain named Matapang had
strongly objected to having his baby girl
baptized by Fr. San Vitores.
• When he learned that his wife had
brought their baby to the priest for
baptism, he flew into a rage and threw
spears and darts first at Pedro so Pedro
would not be able to protect the priest.
