Computer Applications in Business: Lecture No.7

This document discusses the characteristics of computers. It describes how computers can store large amounts of data efficiently and retrieve it quickly. Computers can also perform tasks automatically once programmed and can multitask by doing different tasks simultaneously. While computers have powerful memory and processing capabilities, they are limited because they have no intelligence or feelings and can only function based on the instructions they are given by users.

Today’s Lecture Topic
Characteristics of Computer

2
6 Storage
Capacity
 Computers can store data and instructions with a
lot of volume and very high efficiency.
 Computers have the ability to store all types of data
such as data, pictures, files, programs, games, and
sound for many years and later we can get any data in
a few seconds at any time for taking that information
and for future retrieval.
 You can also store data in secondary storage
devices such as floppies, which can be kept outside
your computer and can be carried to other
3
computers.
7 Quick Decisions
 The computer takes the decision very
quickly, given by the user which is the
instruction arithmetic data or logical
data.
 All Mathematical data is called
arithmetic data.
 Copy Document, Delete file, open
camera etc. this type of data is called
Logical data. 4
8 Automatic
 The computer can perform automatically
when assigned any task or operation.
 Once a Program is in the computer’s
memory, CPU follows the instructions until
it meets the last instruction.
 Thus automation bring the program
execution fast.

5
9 Multitasking
 Multitasking is also a very special
feature of computers. A user can do
different types of tasks on the computer
at the same time.
 Like we are using MS Word in computer
as well as installing software and also
getting printouts.
 We can do a lot of work at the same
time. 6
10 Power of

 Remembering…
Power of remembering is also very
special Characteristics of the computer.
 You can store many types of information
and data on your computer in very large
quantities. Whenever you need this data
in future, you can get that data in a few
seconds. 7
10 Power of

Remembering
You can get the data even after a long
time. It depends on you, after how
long or after how many years you
need the data.

8
11 No IQ
 Computer is a dumb machine and it
cannot do any work without
instructions from the user.
 It performs the instructions at
tremendous speed and with
accuracy. It is you to decide what
you want to do and in what
sequence. So a computer cannot
take its own decision as you can. 9
12 No Feelings
  Computers are devoid of emotions. They have no
feelings and no instincts because they are machine.
Although men have succeeded in building a memory
for the computer, but no computer possesses the
equivalent of human heart and soul.
 Based on our feelings, taste, knowledge, and
experience, we often make certain judgments in our
day-to-day life. But computers cannot make such
judgments on their own. Their judgments are based
on the instructions given to them in the form of
programs that are written by us.
