Caring the
roads in
Monsoon season
As we know the excess of moisture content adversely
affects the strength of flexible (bituminous) roads.
The strength of subgrade and its foundation is reduced
by 50%
The strength of structural layers such as GSB and
WMM is affected due to mud pumping.
The strength of bitumen layers is also get affected and
is reduced by 20%.
Thus caring becomes important
Repair of pot holes and crack is often completed before
the rainy season to control the ingress of water
• But overloading remains a problem.
Although standard axel load 8 to 10 t for single axle with double wheel,
thus wheel load remains about 2500 kg. for that most of the roads remain
safe during dry weather but during rains the equations never remains the
same
Road foundations are of two type of soils:
Plastic (Silty and Clayey soil) and non plastic (sandy soil)
CBR
Moisture content
Moisture is the weakness of clay, it is
well known to all of us.
Let us see the typical design of a low traffic volume
road as per IRC SP 72:2015 for a good subgrade
CBR value of 8 to 9 % & Traffic up to 1.0 msa
Surfacing with 20 ogpc with seal coat
225 mm WMM/WBM Layer
150 mm GSB Layer
Total = 375 mm
Let us see up to how much wheel Load these sections are safe as per
American Transportation Department Research
Wheel Load Wheel Load
~6000 kg ~6000 kg
Minimum Required Crust
• P= wheel load (say Truck with 10 tyres having a Gross weight of 30 t, load on each
wheel is = 3000 kg.
• A= Contact area of tyre it varies with load and inflation pressure let us assume most
reasonable as 500 sq cm
• CBR of subgrade at worst moisture condition let us assume 5%
• Solving above equation we get pavement crust thickness = 30 cm
• Thus the roads designed for traffic < 1 msa or having crust < 300 mm need load
restriction during rainy seasons.
• Using reverse calculation you can find safe wheel load for you roads.
Depending upon the Crust thickness and most likely in-situ subgrade CBR in rainy
season maximum wheel load limit can be imposed.
Temporary load restrictions are used to
protect weak low volume roads during
critical seasons, when the roads are at
their weakest
