Plate With Surface Crack: BITS Pilani

BITS Pilani is an educational institution with campuses in Pilani, Dubai, Goa, and Hyderabad. The document provides information about a plate with surface crack that is subjected to tensile fatigue pressure. It outlines the problem statement of determining the stress intensity factor and fatigue life when the crack reaches half thickness. It lists the learning outcomes of importing a CDB file, incorporating a semi-elliptical crack, determining stress intensity factor, performing crack growth analysis, and estimating fatigue life. It provides steps to solve the problem by importing the CDB file, incorporating the initial crack, performing static and growth crack analyses, and reviewing results.

Plate with surface crack

P r ob l e m S t at e m e nt
• A Plate of 100 x 80 x 10 mm is subjected to a tensile fatigue pressure of 120 MPa
in the presence of crack of length, 2a = 6 mm and depth, c = 3 mm. Determine
the stress intensity factor of mode I and fatigue life when the crack reaches half
of its thickness. ΔKth = 160 MPa√mm, KC = 1600 MPa√mm, C = 5.21E-13, n = 3.
