IP Address An Internet Protocol address
(IP address)
is a numerical label assigned to each
device (e.g., computer, printer)
participating in a computer network that
uses the Internet Protocol for
communication.
An IP address serves two principal
functions: host or network interface
identification location addressing. 
IP Addresses
An IP address is an address used
to uniquely identify a device on
an IP network.
IP Addresses
The address is made up of 32 binary bits
which can be divisible into a network
portion and host portion with the help of a
subnet mask.
32 binary bits are broken into four octets
(1 octet = 8 bits)
Dotted decimal format (for example,
192.168.0.1)
IP Classes Purpose
Class A -Used for large networks, implemented
by large companies and some countries
Class B- Used for medium-sized networks,
implemented by universities
Class C -Used for small networks, implemented
by ISPs for customer subscriptions
Class D- Used for special use for multicasting
 Class E- Used for experimental testing
IP Address Classes
Class A: The first octet is the network
portion. Octets 2, 3, and 4 are for
subnets/hosts
Class B: The first two octets are the
network portion. Octets 3 and 4 are for
subnets/hosts
Class C: The first three octets are the
network portion. Octet 4 is for
subnets/hosts

Class A 10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255

Class B 172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255

Network Masks

Distinguishes which portion of the


address identifies the network and which
portion of the address identifies the node.
Default masks:
Class A: 255.0.0.0
Class B: 255.255.0.0
Class C: 255.255.255.0

what it sounds like: it's an IP address that
doesn't change. Static IP addresses are
manually assigned to a device,
 static IP address (also known as fixed IP
address) is simply one that doesn’t
change. Your computer decides upon the
address it wants, and it tells the router. But
why would you want to set this up, and is
there a better solution?
